Hi all,

My DS16 recently started sixth form and he took chem, bio, maths and computer science. He's considering switching his a levels to take chem, maths, further maths and physics in order to study engineering instead of medicine. My DS is very academic and he wants to find a career where he can use his passion for science and learning. Is engineering a safe job in the UK or is it slowly going to be replaced by AI? Money is obviously important to my DS. Are engineers payed well in the uk and what engineering fields are most highly rewarded? Also is earning six figures as an engineer uncommon in the UK?

Engineering is better than average paid but you need to be working a while, get chartered etc to get better pay, different fields pay differently - my dd is earning above average 3 years out of university but not in banking or magic circle law leagues. By 30 £100k is feasible but far from normal, most will be earning £60-70k

My husband was a graduate electronics engineer. However, what he really loved was the R & D side of things, he was lucky enough to be able to continue with this up to retirement, and his input was greatly valued by his colleagues. However, his salary, though perfectly respectable, was not stellar - certainly nowhere near 6 figures. To get to that level he would have had to apply for management roles, which didn't interest him.
