Will my 16 year old be fine buying beer on Amazon, (check description)

1986mam · 14/08/2025 20:17

My 16 year old has took the next step in his life and is now travelling to away games with his pals. Whenever he asks I usually buy him some beer for the train, nothing over the top. However, we are going to the Lake District and he’s getting the train from there next week and as you could imagine I’ve got very little time to go out and buy him some, so I was just wondering about the risks of him buying beer on amazon. He could probably pass as 18 and give a fake DOB when he collects it but I was just afraid they won’t take his word for it and some consequences may come his way like a ban from Amazon. Can anyone give any insight to how strict Amazon are on age verification and ID ect? Thank you x

I'm surprised he gets away with drinking it on the train. As someone who checks ID as part of my job, I'd be highly suspicious of him and you can usually tell when they start speaking whatever they look like.

Is there an age requirement for drinking on a train? I've been on very many football trains, with groups of lads drinking. I'd be amazed if they've ever had their ID checked.

pinkdelight · 15/08/2025 09:15

desperate to get hammered - the OP is about the pickle she's in trying to illegally get beers for him. If he wasn't desperate - if it hadn't become an integral part of the experience - he'd be fine to go without wouldn't he. No one's talking about wine with a meal. They're talking about 16yo lads drinking beer on trains. That's much more part of British lout culture than European glass of red culture.

Weirdle · 15/08/2025 09:15

If the OP is genuine they have perhaps never travelled by train themselves.

I’m another who often takes the train alone - and there is nothing worse than gangs of drunken men hijacking the peace of a train carriage.

I find it extremely difficult to believe any mother would be encouraging her underage son to engage in this behaviour.

I enjoy a wine or beer on a train sometimes. Of course it’s not essential, but it is a pleasurable part of the experience. Doesn’t mean I’m an alcoholic.

Again, the vast majority of football fans are not interested in ‘hijacking train carriages’.

Of course there are some who cause issues, but ime most are there to watch their team. Those who are very drunk will be refused entry to the match in any event as it is a criminal offence.

Weirdle · 15/08/2025 09:34

Perhaps you didn’t understand my post. I did not mention football at all. Gangs of loud men drinking on trains might equally be businessmen in suits. It’s equally unpleasant whatever the purpose of their journey.

And even when the drinkers are over 18 it is not primarily a matter of legality but of plain good manners and consideration for other travellers.

I’ve spent plenty of time commuting by train and am not averse to a quiet sip of wine on a late night journey. But I’ve never caused disturbance or alarm to any other passenger. In fact, I’ve never even seen merry hen party groups loaded down with cheap champagne causing upset to anyone else on trains.

Maybe a law specifically forbidding men from train drinking would be the answer? (Not Even Joking.)

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 15/08/2025 09:38

Give me strength 🤦. I let my boys have beer for parties and socialising. But to go out of my way to ensure they get pissed on a train is fucking ridiculous. Grow up and parent.

Are you 16?

So weird that you're talking about measures taking at the matches and the 'vast majority of football fans'. We're talking specifically about lads drinking on trains.

cramptramp · 15/08/2025 09:50

I hope they are really strict and he can’t buy it.

Edited

I’ve seen lots of drunken hen nights causing issues on trains 🙀

I’m not really sure what trains have to do with it. Most football fans are perfectly able to have a few drinks as part of the match day expedience.

I have a season ticket for a top flight club (in Scotland) and matches are attended by a huge range of people of all ages, both male and female.

Which is equally as unpleasant. They’re also presumably not 16.

im not sure if you’ve fully understood what you’re arguing for @BeachLife2. You seem so set in appearing cool. We’re not talking about 16yo’s having the odd drink, of course most do at parties. We’re talking about a parent enquiring how to deliberately break the law on behalf of her son.

that said, the op clearly has just lit the torch paper and bumbled off. But that doesn’t matter, interesting discussion anyway.

I'm not really sure what your season ticket for a top flight club (in Scotland) has to do with it. The post is about getting beer illegally from Amazon for a 16yo boy on a train.

There's absolutely no issue with a 16 year old having a few bottles of beer. It's not magically safer the day they turn 18 😂

Other countries don't have this puritanical approach and have far fewer issues with alcohol. It's far better for teens to have a safe supply of beer than be necking dodgy vodka from a mate.

On your question, I can't see Amazon allowing it unfortunately so you will need to get him it.

Sure - but he doesnt need it. If he can't manage a game without a beer he has a drinking problem.

Mulledjuice · 15/08/2025 10:24

BeachLife2 · 15/08/2025 08:58

Why on earth wouldn't you @arethereanyleftatall? He wants a few beers, not cocaine 😂

It is actually perfectly legal for 16 year olds to have beer or wine in a restaurant.

So he can go to a restaurant for his beer then!

BeachLife2 · 15/08/2025 10:32

@arethereanyleftatall

You are trying to create a narrative that most football fans on trains are drunken louts; which couldn't be further from the truth.

The vast majority are able to have a few beers perfectly sensibly. That remains the case whether the OP's DS is 16 and 364 days old or 18 and one day.

BeachLife2 · 15/08/2025 10:32

@Mulledjuice

Technically alcohol isn't required for any activity. That doesn't mean you're an alcoholic if you like a glass of wine while watching telly on a Saturday night 😂

I quite agree. However if you can't manage Saturday night telly without a glass of wine then that is indicative of a problem.

purplespink · 15/08/2025 11:44

@BeachLife2which one?Grin

CaffeinatedSeagull · 15/08/2025 12:12

How is he getting to the train station? If you’re dropping him off there will surely be a corner shop nearby that you can quickly pop into and grab a few cans.

Understandable some will not want to be around groups of men drinking on a train. There’s a strong argument for more trains to have ‘quiet’ carriages. That’ll at least keep both separated and hopefully happy!

Megifer · 15/08/2025 12:17

Pretty sure there are shops in the Lakes?

BeachLife2 · 15/08/2025 17:04

@Mulledjuice

And I don't see any suggestion that the OP's DS won't cope if beer isn't available.

Perfectly understandably though, it is a part of the match day experience that many enjoy.

Thank you to those who didn’t decide to berate me in this thread. For the record, my son will be working soon, I have no issue with him drinking. If you think a 16 year old shouldn’t then fair enough, but don’t have a go at me. Thank you to those that helped x
