Teenager suddenly ‘anti’ A levels

I have a capable child who I hope will just about get the GCSE grades required for A levels when they’re released next week. We have a good sixth form within walking distance.

It was my understanding that children now had to either be in education OR undertaking an apprenticeship until they’re 18, but I found out today that some of her friends are planning to work local cash in hand jobs instead (through family friends)…..

She’s now thrown her toys out of the pram and doesn’t want to do A levels because none of her friends will be at the school and everyone else will have money and she won’t….

I can see why, at 16, this feels very unfair and how it would be tempting to follow the same path but I’m worried that she’ll regret not getting the A levels under her belt.

has anyone had a similar dilemma or can shed any light on what is allowed / not allowed from an education/working perspective pre 18.…?

They should be in employment, education or training. But if they aren't there's not really anything done.

Could she get a part time job?

Tell her if she's going to get a job, even if cash in hand she will have to start paying board and lodge, her phone contract, club membership, own clothes etc.

Theoretically, yes you have to be in education or an apprenticeship or employment either training.
Actually, nobody really checks but you don’t get child benefit if she’s not in education.
Has she thought about an apprenticeship? Earning and training at the same time? Google “find an apprenticeship” and you’ll get the gov site with opportunities in your area.
