Period swimwear

Going on holiday soon with DD age 17 and not sure if her period will come while we are away. How do others this age manage periods while on holiday? I was thinking of buying a period swimsuit from Modibodi. Has anyone used one of these and do they work? How do you get the right size as they can't be returned?

Dd won't use tampons and doesn't have regular periods so period delays tablets won't work.

I got my dd12 a modibodi and it is gorgeous! Such good quality, you will need to measure her waist, bust and hips and make a judgement on fit then. That’s what I did and it’s perfect! Well worth the price!

Most use internal protection of some kind, be that tampons, a cup or a disk.

The swim gear is a very recent thing that phenomena that seems to work well for many.

DD has modibodi swim bottoms. She just has black ones and has a black normal tankinis and then uses the modibodi bottoms instead of the normal ones if needed. They seem to work fine. She is really not keen on internal methods.

I cannot get my head around how these work. So could you put costume on in the morning and spend normal day at beach / pool inc swimming and no leaks? How?

I’m amazed this is a thing. That works. I have tried period underwear which was frankly hilarious in its inability to contain my heavy flow. How could it work if you’re swimming all day?

I’d be encouraging her to get used to tampons.

It feels like witchcraft but it does work. Both DD and I use period pants. The swimwear is supposed to be a snug fit so water doesn't get in and the fabric is water repellent which means the internal fabric absorbs the period blood as usual.

DD has a Modibodi swimsuit and uses their period pants for heavy flow. They work well for her.

DD has Modibodi swim bottoms. She wears them under surf shorts.

Another one singing Modibodi’s praises. My dd (11) started her periods earlier this year and is still getting to grips with it all. She had a swimming party last weekend but her period this month started earlier than we were expecting and so I had to get her some Modibodi bikini bottoms. She was worried they wouldn’t work for her (as she has pretty heavy bleeding) and everyone would know they weren’t normal bikini bottoms. But they worked perfectly for her, looked great and she felt confident playing with her friends, getting in and out of the water, and generally had a great time.

DD13 has used tampons from her 2nd period. She is a competitive gymnast so needed to for competitions, but it’s also super handy to get used to them for swimming, so she can still hang out at the pools or swim with family etc. We live abroad and they swim numerous times daily from june-mid September so one pair of swim pants wouldn’t really work for her, and I think they are quite expensive?

I got DD period swimsuits from Wuka, they seem great. Also period cycling shorts from Amazon.

Thank for all the responses, really helpful to hear your experiences! We are going to order a Modibodi swimming costume and see how it works out (if it is needed that is!)
