Clothing advice for teen boys

Those with teens how do you know what’s in fashion and what’s not? My son is 13 he is autistic and has no interest in fashion. He has a few school trips and no school uniform days that come up and I would like to get him some fashionable clothes to wear for them as he has been bullied in the past for wearing non branded clothes but how do I know what’s in fashion? As a mum in her 30s I have no clue what’s fashionable to teen boys and neither does he. He would need men’s sizes now. Any advice? Thanks. Is Nike still the most fashionable?

Fashion depends on who your tribe is. My DS is also ASD and clothing has been hard. He's not remotely interested in clothes or shopping or what he wears as long as it is comfortable, but also doesn't want to stand out / draw attention to himself in any way. He wouldn't be wanting to be "fashionable" though: seeking to not draw attention to yourself is not seeking to be fashionable. For us, he bought plain trousers (next, jeans and chinos -- needed for 6th form as joggers and sports wear not ok) and plain t shirts and hoodies, topped up with more "fashion" items as presents from my nephews (who are interested in clothes).

yes.i go with sports direct. adidas, nike, under armour,t shirts, joggers, shorts etc

EmberEmberEmber · 24/06/2025 12:21

He wouldn’t be standing out if he was wearing what the other kids wear that’s what I mean what’s the “in” thing for teenage boys

but it's different depending on where you are and who he is at school with. e.g. my girls were at one school where all the girls carried their books in large tote / handbags. They moved schools where backpacks were the thing; one girl started from a "handbag" school and came to school with a handbag and was given grief for it.

Anything from JD sports. Nike t shirts are fine. Joggers. Baggy jeans and jorts from somewhere like bershka. Hope he finds some clothes he likes :)

Fuckitydoodah · 24/06/2025 12:27

My almost 13yr old DS wears sports t-shirts mainly from sports direct - under armour, Nike and Adidas. He likes the ones in the shiny quick dry material. He wears shorts this time of year, which are a mixture of sports or non brand. He likes the jogging bottom material ones that are fleecy on the inside.

He has a couple of hoodies for cooler weather, again they are Nike etc.

I'll find some links.

I'd say what he wears is pretty typical of his peer group

Comedycook · 24/06/2025 12:30

What's fashionable for teenage boys is very area dependent. Here in my part of London, nike is a very safe choice. Black Nike tracksuit bottoms and a plainish t shirt/hoodie with a logo would mean you'd fit in with the crowd.

Comedycook · 24/06/2025 12:32

At age 13 my tall ds was either wearing the very biggest junior size or the smallest adult size.

InMyOpenOnion · 24/06/2025 12:37

My 13 year old likes Hollister and H&M.

EmberEmberEmber · 24/06/2025 12:38

Thanks for the links that is very helpful I will show him them when he gets in.

We are in London so that’s helpful to know Nike is a safe choice.

Agreed you can't go wrong with JD and Sports Direct. He's not aiming for a high fashion look so go for some well known bands that won't offend anyone. Mine doesn't care much either but is partial to a cosy hoodie. Most of his clothes are Nike, Vans, H&M & Primark for plain joggers - with an honorable mention for North Face items I buy in the sale. I recommend Vans hoodies by the way, they wash really well and come in some nice colours.

OnyourbarksGSG · 24/06/2025 12:46

My 13yo DN is all into Montirex T-shirts ( the ones that look like static) and Nike.

Y2ker · 24/06/2025 12:56

Adidas, Nike, Vans, under armour here. I wouldn't go head to toe branded though. My ds is pretty teen but has just started to notice 'brands'. I am totally out of my depth with boys' clothes 😆

Icouldabeenalawyer · 24/06/2025 13:03

Hi OP depends where you are but for mine, as pp have said, JD is a safe bet, under armour, montirex is big here, technicals, adidas, Nike.
My ds has some shorts & t sets as above, and these are great for when he plays out and they wash & dry really quickly, however as he said himself he doesn’t want to be a ‘tracksuit kid’ and he likes hm for stuff like baggy jeans, cargo pants, plain t shirts in greys, navy etc. Also next & M&S are a winner, got quite a few shirts a t sets from there and they’re really smart. Some collared and nice for if we go out for lunch or something and some like a more relaxed fit which look lovely on and really trendy- think Arne but without the price tag!!

He has worn the named stuff and more ‘fashion’ stuff for school trips/own clothes. Said a mate asked once why he was wearing jeans & not tracksuit one time, but it was more a curiosity thing rather than teasing-phew! X

Icouldabeenalawyer · 24/06/2025 13:05

Meant to say, the age 15 stuff in next & ms is basically men’s (I have a massive lanky teenager now 💙) and the xs in next fits him too x

Mauvehoodie · 24/06/2025 13:16

I have a 13 year old son and it seems to be about the shape - loose on the bottom half so slightly baggy jeans or bermuda type denim shorts or joggers without cuffs at the bottom. Everything with white socks (Nike or adidas), the crew length not the trainer length.

This sort of look or this.

DS likes Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Under Armour but tends to choose things with a subtle logo rather than the massive logos they sometimes put on.

Nicflowers82 · 24/06/2025 13:19

Agreee with anything from JD sports. Brands like Nike, Under Armour, Montirex, North Face, Berghaus. Like PPs have said, smaller rather than larger logos seem to be the preference! Also H&M for non sports stuff, they do great t shirts and shorts .

Steelworks · 24/06/2025 13:23

Around here, it seems to be oversized white tops, with or without a printed design, and either cargo trousers or paler, looser jeans.

Brands include -
Goose and Gander
Pull and Bear
Zara
Asos

plus the sports brands mentioned above.

Just clicked on the ASOS link by @Mauvehoodie , and that’s the exact look my son goes for - white tshirt with print design and paler, looser jeans.

Longhotsummers · 24/06/2025 13:26

Have a look at Erica Davies’ range for Asda. Lovely stuff and a bit different.

Jujujudo · 24/06/2025 13:30

It depends on his own interests etc. And also what he feels comfy in. Sizing is tricky around ages 14-16 when they’re too big for kids’ clothes and not quite big enough for men’s. My son is 16 and really likes the baggy jeans and band T-shirt look. He gets straight leg Levi’s in different shades and oversized T-shirts because he hates to feel constricted. Trainers are important.. Next sells Nike and Adidas- we do well in Next. You could take him with you and see what he likes and start there.

DiscoBeat · 24/06/2025 13:30

Both of my sons (17 and 14) tend to prefer unlabelled clothes mostly - plain T shirts and light coloured shorts from Uniqlo or H and M. No brands like Nike or Adidas which they deem 'chavvy' (yes I do pull them up on it). DS17 likes light coloured linen shirts from Hollister and light cargos or chinos for something a bit smarter . Trainers he likes Ralph Lauren ones for smart but he really looks after them and his feet have stopped growing so we don't mind. They both have Nike trainers for out and about. Both will wear jeans in colder weather.

OldEnoughToFancyBobGeldof · 24/06/2025 13:30

You’ll get Nike, Adidas, Ralph Lauren, and Under Armour all in Tkmaxx.

Denimrules · 24/06/2025 13:41

It depends on which tribe he wants to hang out with. If boys are making fun of him for not wearing logos, then I'd think of them as the immature kids.

My DC is grown up now but was never one to wear what he called 'road man' clothing. He chose small logo only items and avoided the then ubiquitous North Face. Any overly puffed coat was frowned upon, including a practical waterproof puffer with a hood I got from Mountain Warehouse.

I think Nike with smaller ticks is still cool. Stripes are still out. The baggy shorts are in but not easy to pull off. Jersey sweatshirt material shorts are a comfy default.
