17dd is anxious about mortality

Hello all

My 17 dd struggles with anxiety. She has just come to the end of an eight week CBT intervention. She has said that she fears death because it’s so final and is questioning her purpose in life.😔

Can anyone recommend any decent books to support her? She’s not an avid reader but I think she would benefit from some written wisdom! I really feel for her. She has had such a great Y12 and really embraces life. Thank you!

Staring at the sun by Irvin Yalom. Although it’s written from a non religious perspective.

I went through a similar experience in my 20’s, I definitely found a lot of comfort in this book.

Duck, Death & The Tulip? It’s very sweet and not childish really! Shows us that death may walk with us but in a gentle, lonely way and not a scary way.

I understand what you're going through. I had a similar situation with my DD - she was really trying to make sense of some huge topics, and it's hard to give an answer a lot of the time (because often there aren't really any answers!)

I think anxiety about mortality is a symptom of general anxiety and also maybe not feeling completely fulfilled. Once you tackle the general anxiety, the specific thoughts of mortality will hopefully become quieter.

I found this really helpful article that helped me talk to my DD about her mental health, from these people who have also made a wellbeing app for teen girls (lots of info about anxiety on their too and how to cope with it). I went through this. Its awful, it would give me full on panic attacks. I did get over it though. I recently heard Brian Cox talking about it. We are the cosmos made conscious and life is the means by which the universe understands itself.” - Brian Cox

I dunno that really struck a chord with me. The idea we qre the universe and trying to understand ourselves... It suddenly made it all quite sweet.

Would it be so bad, if she believed in God, has a soul, and will return to God at the end? Millions of people get great consolation from this. i understand and respect that others dont.. Lorna Byrnes Angels in my Hair is lovely, it is faith based.

Thank you! She’s a practical lass and in a hurry (always in a rush) for solutions. I think the religious angle could bring me comfort ❤️
