Hi , my yp has just got her own car and we’ve had a black box fitted , she won’t be taking it back to uni in sept & we also have a two week holiday
Will the insurance company cancel the policy if it’s not driven enough ?

Hastings will, just Google them. They cancel policy’s all the time. Hopefully you aren’t with them

raspberrymilkshake · 11/06/2025 16:15

Yes we are with Hastings

I would look into canceling the policy before they do then. If an insurance company cancel a policy you will have to declare that forever more and it will massively effect the premiums

I’m always reading about Hastings canceling people’s policies for the slightest things

Thanks Tollington if we do that now we’ll probably lose the money that we paid

Are there other insurance companies that you know of that don’t have the same policy please ?

Dd is with sterling. Don't know their cancellation policy but they're very good at the end of a phone with questions.
Been good so far and we're a year in.

I’m not sure about other company’s policy’s unfortunately. I would maybe get some quotes on Confused and find out who offers black box policy’s and then call the cheapest and ask what will happen if the car isn’t driven for quite some time

Yes you will lose some money if you cancel the policy, I think it depends on how long is left on the policy

That’s better than having Hastings cancel the policy because the car hasn’t been driven for X amount of time though. If an insurance company cancel the policy off their own back you have to declare it every time you take out a new policy. It’s one of the questions you get asked. The worst part about it is that it’s not like the Have you had any claims in the last five years? There’s no time limit on a cancelled policy, they don’t ask if you’ve had a policy cancelled in the last five years, it’s have you ever had a policy cancelled so you could be fifty years old and have a policy that was cancelled fifteen years ago and you still have to answer yes. Time doesn’t remove it

On Reddit there’s a section called Car Talk UK and there’s always post from people having had Hastings cancel their policies. Google will also bring up loads of hits. Hastings just seem to enjoy cancelling policies for the slightest thing

You should get a pro-rata refund.

I cancelled our dc policy with Hastings as they were rarely driving the car and it wasn't cost effective to keep it and got a refund, pro-rata and minus admin fee I think about £50.
