Hastings insurance black box

Hi , we’ve just done Hastings insurance with a black box for our yp
Bit of a question but how does the black box differentiate if I’m driving or my daughter
Or maybe parents don’t drive their yp car

It links to their phone. I don't have to use the black box if I drive it.

We have just got one of these too, and different to last year's device (ticker) they are not interested in how my husband or I drive aa named drivers, just her driving apparently. If she is driven by us, she needs to tell it she's the passenger. Similarly I've told her not to let her friends use her phone if she's driving them as it will register and deduct points.
It certainly feels more 'strict' than the ticker device, but that's probably no bad thing, and it has reduced her premium by more than half compared to last year.

Thankyou for your replies , so if it was me driving and my yp was sitting next to me would she need to turn off the app ? I mean how does it know she’s being honest and is a passenger ?

If you are driving your yp can switch it on app that they are the passenger. If they are classed as the main driver and do this too often, I. E not telling the truth then this will flag as they are supposed to be doing the majority of the journeys. To be fair my son had this insurance and he kept his score in the 90s and his policy dropped by £1000 the year after with them so definitely worth of for a year

raspberrymilkshake · 09/06/2025 07:56

Thankyou everyone. My yp first drive wasn’t very good , accelerating, braking harshly etc I think that report was a surprise to her she’s getting better scores now .

The more they drive the better the score averages out

MeetTheGrahams · 09/06/2025 19:28

Personally I wouldn't touch a black box policy, too many YP get their insurance cancelled over it and Hastings are notorious for this sharp practice

GeorgeTheFirst · 09/06/2025 19:30

We did fine with Hastings, my son just stuck to the speed limit like he was supposed to do

loveamedicaldrama · 09/06/2025 19:32

Mine's had Hastings black box for 6 months. First couple of trips weren't great scores, but the rest have all been fine.

Hallywally · 09/06/2025 21:29

@MeetTheGrahamsthere often isn’t a choice for teenage drivers but go get a black box policy.

Do you have names of insurers that don't require a black box? My sister has been looking for my nephew, still a learner, and thinks the same but can't find anything that looks like it might be affordable

Ladymeade · 10/06/2025 20:01

We discovered this with Hastings (& I hadn't noticed when I set it up) Our son (just about within his first 2 years after passing his test) has his own car and the insurance is in his name (as main driver) My husband and I are named drivers (helps lower the cost) as we occasionally borrow it and when I saw that we all had to download the app etc. I said bollocks to it and cancelled the policy. I went through a comparison website (via Quidco) and found several insurers that were reasonable and didn't have the black box policy (tbh I would probably be the worst for upsetting a black box...)

VikingLady · 10/06/2025 22:28

I have it after passing my test in my 40s. It saved me a couple of hundred quid per year (I’m into the third year now) and the feedback is brilliant for improving my driving! Genuinely useful. I think it should be compulsory for the first year.

My husband drove my DD’s car this week and realised that he did go above the speed limit on a fly over , he asked my dd to check her app but she said his drive yesterday is greyed out
will this effect her score even though she wasn’t in the car ?

Your daughter can mark the journey in the app after the journey that they're not the driver / they are the passenger. It can take a short while to appear to be able to do this though.
