Only one breast bud

My daughter has had only one breast bud developing on her left side. It’s been like this for one whole year! Her pediatrician says that it is still
considered “normal development,” but I am getting extremely worried that the other breast will
not develop seeing as it’s been so long now. Does anyone have any insight? Has this happened to you or your child? Please help!

My dd had one come up, subside, come up, and then the other . It is normal for one to appear first but a year is quite a while, how old is she ?
If there are no other signs of puberty then it might just be early in the process for her, if she otherwise looks quite far along the Tanner scale, then I would go back to GP.

MumofSpud · 04/06/2025 23:02

This happened but to my DS - he had a flatter nipple / chest area than the other - if that makes sense.
We used to call it his ‘funny nipple’ (I know Blush)
It got more obvious as he got to about 10/11 years old but we never got it checked and thus was before the internet really took off.
One night we were watching ‘Embarrassing Bodies’ and a man was on it with the same thing - turns out it is a thing - Poland Syndrome
We took him to the GP who referred him to a consultant.
When we went the consultant was so sneery -“ so you think you can diagnosis your child from a television programme- what makes you think you can do that?”
I just said ‘DS take your shirt off’!

He ended up having a lot of tests as Poland Syndrome can affect the heart but it was ok - ‘just a missing pec’
It is more prevalent in boys than girls though.

MareBear · 05/06/2025 00:22

She’s only 10, she got the initial breast bud when she was 9, and there doesn’t seem to be any other real signs of puberty. I am waiting on a call back from another pediatrician to see what she says.
I have thought a lot about Poland Syndrome and I hope this isn’t the case because I don’t want her to be self conscious with only one breast.

I had this as a kid, I remember getting checked by a nurse at one point. All developed fine in the end!

MumofSpud · 05/06/2025 06:16

DS was told he’d be able to have cosmetic surgery but in the end he chose not to but at least he was given the option !

Christwosheds · 05/06/2025 08:46

As she is so young still OP, and with no other signs, I think that it will all balance out as puberty gets going , certainly that is what happened with my dd. It’s always good to get things checked though.

Mrsgreen100 · 05/06/2025 19:15

Exactly the same happened to my DD then one breath started to develop the other one much smaller, she’s 23 now and they’re both the same. She did have a panic as a teenager hence had a bra early with a little bit of extra padding on one side.

ElizaJ74 · 05/06/2025 21:36

My daughter is now 22. She has asymmetrical breasts and couldn't care less!
She calls them Wallace and Gromit
I thought it would cause anxiety in her teenage years but its honestly not phased her. When she was younger I said "I'm sure the smaller one will catch up" if it was ever mentioned but that was rare.
I'd definitely not make a fuss

MareBear · 05/06/2025 22:32

Mrsgreen100 thank you so much for your comment! So, your daughter only had one breast bud for a year- ish? I’m just so concerned because everything I read online makes it sound like if it doesn’t happen within 6 months, then it won’t even happen at all!

ElizaJ74 Thank you so much for commenting on my post! When you say asymmetrical, do you mean one is much smaller than the other, or one just didn’t develop at all? That’s wonderful that your daughter is so confident!!

Happened to me.i was about 10 and worried.didnt tell anyone. After about 18 months they levelled out.i read years later that it was normal.

MareBear · 12/06/2025 20:41

So, your daughter only had one breast bud for a prolonged period of time? The other side for my daughter hasn’t even started budding yet! Do you remember how long it took for the other side to “bloom”? I’m just so worried because it’s been so so long and nothing has happened on the right side. It’s completely flat.

Is it quite a big breast bud or still quite small? At 10, I don’t think I’d worry. My daughter is 9 and has one breast bud, it’s a very tiny lump at the moment. There’s nothing on the other side. But it’s only been about a month for her

That is how we started out. Got one breast bud at 9, and that’s it! Her left side has grown a tad bit since then, but not too much. It’s only noticeable if she’s wearing a tight shirt. Her pediatrician said that upon inspection, her right side isn’t completely flat, as there is some raised tissue, but it’s not quite considered a breast bud yet. I’m just worried sick about it.

Hello! So, you only had one actual breast bud for a prolonged period of time? Did your one breast grow in size before the other one had a chance to even “bud”? Because I’m reading that it “could take as long as six months” for the other bud to show up, but we’ve been waiting a whole year!! Her pediatrician insists that it’s fine, but I’m seriously concerned at this point,

I just wanted to reassure you as a female with Polands Syndrome there is things they can do so she wouldn’t be left with one breast. I am 37 now but my PS was very obvious from when I was a very young child, much younger than your daughter. Hopefully she develops but she wouldn’t be left if it is Polands xx

I didn't end up with one boob! Just one bud then eventually a second bud.a little uneven for a while then levelled out.i didn't tell anyone.my mum didn't notice.

Yes, this can be normal, but my concern is that she’s had only one bud thats now growing a bit, and the other side is still flat, and it’s been exactly a year. I feel it’s been too long. The timeline is really worrying me. I feel like at this point, the other one should have “blossomed” as well, but nothing has happened at all. I’m glad everything worked out for you 🙂 I just can’t seem to find anybody that has had to wait a year (or more)for the other breast bud to come in.

Hi, I'm sure she Will soon start budding as she get further into puberty, those pesky hormones, is there any tenderness on the non developed side yet? If your ped has noticed the right side is not completely flat it sounds like budding has started.

My DH is completely concave on one side! I wonder if he has this.

Hello! Thank you for your reply! Do you remember how long it took for the other breast to form a bud and start developing after your first one? Was it at least a year? A lot of people are saying that this has happened and can be normal, but the time frame is that’s scaring me the most!

Don't be scared OP, how does your DD feel? She is only 10, Try not to let it get to you. When her body is ready she will soon start getting breasts. My daughter's were tender when they started to grow.

Thank you for the encouragement. She feels ok right now because her pediatrician says it can be normal. But the problem is she’s only developing one breast, and has been for a year now. Her other side doesn’t even have a breast bud so the difference is getting visible from outside her clothes. I don’t mention any of this to her because I dont want her to freak out as well, but I am terrified that she will only develop one breast and have a difficult time with it. I’m sure you can tell that I’m just anxiety ridden over this, but I can’t help it. I don’t want her to struggle with self image if she doesn’t develop a right breast.

I'm sorry OP, I can't remember. I do know it was long enough that my mum got me checked out, and she was not the type to rush to the drs. I'm sorry I can't be more reassuring in that sense.

I'm so very very sorry you are both in this situation. Unfortunately at the moment it is going to be a waiting game. Maybe once she starts getting other signs of puberty, growth spurt, pubic hair and closer to periods starting then hopefully her other breast will begin to appear. When are you next seeing your pediatrician?
