Eloine pill for 14y dd

Hi, my dd has been prescribed this to help regulate her periods as they are very frequent and heavy.

I am wary as she already has struggles with anxiety & stress, so haven’t started her on it yet. I know sometimes the pill can help regulate mood too but sometimes cause anxiety.

If anyone has experience of a teen on the pill and impact on mood / anxiety I would really appreciate if you could share your experience, especially if it’s the Eloine pill as I understand this is a lower dose specifically for teens / young adults.

Thanks

I don't have experience of Eloine but I was prescribed the pill as a teen to help with hormonal mood problems. It was brilliant. In my 20s the doctor wanted to try be out on a "new pill" which absolutely didn't work and my poor housemates had to stage an "intervention" and get me back on the old one.

Testimony of one person, but it was a life saver (mainly for those around me!)

My then 14 yr old DD started taking Eloine (for the same reason) I was wary too, for the same reason as you. I have to say I didn’t notice any change in her mood but it’s been great for her not to have to deal with frequent, heavy periods. When I was researching online for users’ experiences of Eloine I found a huge variety of different reactions so in the end we just bit the bullet and went ahead.

Everyone’s different, so i’m not totally sure how to answer this one, obviously i’m not a medical professional but in my experience it has helped with physical symptoms like acne but not my mood.
I think it can take a while for someone to regulate their symptoms with the pill, so if you do give it a go, it might help to track her moods alongside her flow from the start (we are luna app can be good for this as it's for teens) then you can bring that to the doctor on your next visit...thinking it could make the process easier to follow and adjust.

@JamNittyGritty i know this is an ole post, I was interested in how your dd got on with this pill please?

I have asked specifically for this pill over microgynon due to online research

Can I ask what you found in your research that made you ask for this pill instead of microgynon? My dd has been offered microgynon but I had a bad experience on it myself

@Ivyy I did a lot of research. All medication has risks, but Eloine is preferred for pmdd. These are NICE Pmdd guidelines:

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/premenstrual-syndrome/management/management/

  • There is more evidence to support the use of COCs containing drospirenone and ethinylestradiol, and specifically those with the lower dose of 20 mcg ethinylestradiol. In the UK, although not licensed for PMS alone, the only equivalent COC to those most studied is currently Eloine® (drospirenone 3 mg and ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms), which is taken as a 28 day cycle with 24 days of active pills and 4 days of placebo. However, other drospirenone-containing and other new-generation COCs may also be effective, especially if they have been used before and have been found to be of benefit.

@Ivyy my go was not able to prescribe Eloine, there is a slight cost implication. I will post the screenshots from the NICE website with the cost to the NHS for both pills.

my local chemist has a private gp who is able to prescribe it to me if my gp agrees. She started the microgynon yesterday while we wait to see what the gp say.

I will keep you updated.

@50lbstolose she’s been fine with it - been not far off a year and it’s been a relief for her to have lighter and regular period. Possibly helped with pmt but she’s a bit all over the place emotionally so hard to tell - no downsides - so from our experience I would say a good thing.

My daughter is 18 and has been on this pill for 5 years. When 13 she had terrible low moods all to do with her periods, she in fact was diagnosed with PMDD. This pill has been life changing for her, I done lots of research and had to fight the doctors for this specific pill as it’s more expensive than the generic ones they give out, but I am bloody glad I did, she has very light periods and the changes it made to her moods was actually unbelievable, originally they thought she was depressed and referred to CAMHS and everything and within 3 months of taking the Eloine tablet she was thriving!
