Recommendations for humorous and good general Teen Advice books for my 14 yr old daughter without pushing any ideologies?

I’m looking for a good book for my 14 year old daughter, but it’s difficult to find books that aren’t specific to a mental health issue. Katz Cooke books were great, but are no longer updated so don’t have updated social media considerations. Also keen to have a book that is not pushing damaging ideologies, but deals sensibly with teen issues such as body changes, health, sex and sexuality, drugs, bullying, friends and social media.

ideas?

ally's world series by Karen McCombie

Confessions of Georgia Nicolson by Louise Rennison

I read these 2 series around that age and loved them. Not sure if it whats you're looking for.

Edited

They're fictional series but aimed at teenage girls. Sorry if that's not what you're after.

My 12-year-old loves a book called The Girl Guide, by Marawa Ibrahim. It mostly covers health and body changes, with a tiny bit about sex/sexuality and also drugs. It doesn't cover bullying, friends and social media.

However, for the bits that id does cover, it does them very well! Everything is explained in a friendly, breezy, down-to-earth way - like a big sister might. The illustrations are really fun and creative too.

Thank you @TheFieldOfStars

American Girl series. ‘The caring and keeping of you 2’ is aimed at younger teens. ‘Caring and keeping of you 1’ is aimed at older primary / first year of secondary. Good, factual books which cover health (mental and physical), puberty changes in greater depth than bk1, relationships, how to stand up for your beliefs, friendships, Organisational skills etc.
not aimed necessarily at you OP, but if other parents are looking for a book to help a daughter with SEN, they also do a really good book about keeping organised/ tidy, (dunno about dd but I found it really helpful!!) I’ll dig it out because I can’t remember the title. My dd has quite a few in the series, and she finds them really helpful, although she’s a bit old for them, she still likes the recipe book and ‘standing up for yourself’ book.

Might be a bit old fashioned but Emma or Pride & Prejudice are actually so good for teens to read, because there's a strong narrative. There's also Anne of Green Gables, which has a recent TV adaptation. Or something more modern is "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" by Jenny Han.

For my teen, she really got into reading after reading an article on the teen health app luna (_https://weareluna.app/?utm_campaign=mumsnet_share&utm_id=1) all about how to get into it as a routine.

Another thing that helped was to set screentime limits on her phone, so she would pick up a book instead of scrolling on her phone.

Otherwise, you could maybe ask a librabian for recommendations?

What is the website for the app? Do you know if it works on ipads as trying to avoid the phone too much?

You Don't Understand Me by Tara Porter

notnowmrshudson · 22/05/2025 07:25

Are you there god it's me margaret. Really loved it as a teen myself and have since bought a copy for dd 14. It's really funny and deals with a lot of puberty topics so well and relatable for teens x

I really like Nicola Morgan’s books for teenagers - sleep, stress, friends, exams. They might need an update for social media but are fairly recent.

pinkmamalama · 22/05/2025 18:50

I love this book too!!!

MotherofTeenGirl · 24/05/2025 07:14

@parrotonmyshoulder- this sounds what I’m after, thank you!
