Has anybody heard of the law that states under 18's can only work for 2 hours max on Sunday's?

Both my elder kids have had sunday jobs between 16 and 18 and worked 6 hr shifts in retail.

My 17 yr old son saw a job advertised in a local cafe today saying weekend staff needed. He can't work Saturdays due to sporting commitments so asked about Sundays and was told they don't take under 18's for Sunday work Due to the 2 hr rule . Never ever heard this before but google says its true.

This lady was adamant it was against the law and several websites state it is but citizens advice website doesn't mention anything about it being illegal. I think the loophole is definition of "children". Officially a child is any person under 18. Gov website states that children are only allowed to work 2 hours on a Sunday and officially a child is anyone under 18

No, several websites don’t state in. In fact, if you google it, the top hit is this thread!

The Gov website is quite clear on the distinction between ‘children’ and ‘young workers.’

There are definitely several rules around children working as I discovered - When my DC was 16 and had a job at the local shop the school threatened to stop DC from working - they said they were legally allowed to do so if they felt it was interfering with school (at no time was DC missing school to go to work). They wanted DC to stay to some sessions that ran on for about 30mins after the end of the school day but DC didn’t want to as it would have meant being late for work, hence the threats. I thank my lucky stars every day that DC has left that school and no longer has to put up with their crap,

I think she's confused. Many people think children must be in school until 18yrs old, but that's not the case, they can leave full-time education from 16yrs old and work if they wish. I'd be tempted to print off Government info on this to politely show her that this only applies to 16's and under.

But then again, she might be so pig-headed, or thick, that she might not be agreeable to being educated.

This trust in AI as a reputable source of information that we make financial and sometimes medical decisions based upon, is more worrying!

If you look at the start of the government child employment rules, you'll see in England and Wales children can work full time from the school leaving date ie last Friday in June of year 11. So my understanding the section on permitted times then applies to those under that age who can only work part time. Admittedly it isn't very clear if you only look at the section on times and see the word child.

I used to work for a council processing the child employment permit applications 20 years ago. It was certainly only year 11 or younger who needed to follow those rules then and they don't seem to have changed.

In my experience then and of working with children since it's the small companies who don't follow the rules more often, so I suspect in this case the reason small businesses are saying about Sunday for a 17 year old us they only have the rather unclear gov website to go on whereas a big chain has HR and legal so understand the details better.

I used to work 6-7 hours on a Sunday 26 years ago! Definitely never heard this!

16 and 17 year olds are young workers not children
