PuddyMuddles82 · 11/05/2025 20:43

We are going away on holiday at the end of the month and dd will be on the first day of her period. She is asking is there anything she can take to delay it
does anyone know, before I ask GP. She is 15

Yes.

MoveYourSelfDearie · 11/05/2025 20:48

Lol sorry, posted too soon! Yes I remember taking some hormoney tablets to stop my period from arriving on time so I could go on holiday without it

dementedpixie · 11/05/2025 20:51

You may be able to get a GP to prescribe norethisterone to delay her period. It needs to be started a few days before the period is due and taken 3 times a day for as long as you want it to and then her period would arrive a few days after it's stopped

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 11/05/2025 20:53

I don’t even think you need the GP, fairly sure my dd got it direct from a pharmacist, just filled in the online request and the pharmacist prescribed it.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 11/05/2025 20:53

My friend who doesn't take the pill or any hormones did this to delay her period for a holiday.

She was reluctant but said it worked and she had no side effects at all. She would 100% do it again if her period clashes with her honeymoon.

dementedpixie · 11/05/2025 20:53

As she's 15 the online pharmacist may not prescribe it

Gawdimold · 11/05/2025 20:54

Norethestone from the drs is brilliant

3WildOnes · 11/05/2025 20:54

You can order online with superdrugs online doctor service. I think it costs £20. Or you can go to your GP.

Readytohealnow · 11/05/2025 20:54

I would not be messing about with hormones for the first time ahead of a holiday. You have no idea how you might feel on the medication. Nausea, mood swings, headaches etc can ruin a holiday (for her and for everyone else) more than a period.
Does she struggle a lot with periods?

PuddyMuddles82 · 11/05/2025 21:09

@Readytohealnow this is what I’m worried about but she is really upset about being on her period. It is a holiday of a life time and she has been looking forward to it for so long

I know lots of people including myself who have not been able to get this via a prescription from GP’s. You can purchase online but it is between £20 - £30.

oustedbymymate · 11/05/2025 21:23

You can buy tablets to delay period form the pharmacist.

How come the doctor wouldn’t prescribe it?

I’ve just tried pharmacy on line but because she is under 16 it will only let me go so far.

The doctor prescribed it for my dd, who coped well with it. Just got bad cramps when we came back x

thismummydrinksgin · 11/05/2025 21:39

I’d suggest booking a dr appointment and discussing it with them. Weighing up the pros and cons with the experts .

There is but I wouldn’t recommend it. I tried it before a holiday many years ago after being prescribed by the Dr and I felt absolutely rotten, bloated and nauseated all holiday.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 13/05/2025 17:13

I've used norethisterone, it was great. I'm not sure you can buy it OTC if it's for a minor. You'll need to get it sorted quickly as she will need to start it a few days before her period

@teawithmrstillerman of course you can delay your period if you take something like norethisterone. I did it last year so I wouldn't have my period on holiday. You take the tablets 3 times a day for as long as you want it to stay away and then the period starts a few days after you stop the tablets.

Absolutely not true 🤣🤣 there is a literally a tablet that doctors can prescribe for this

I love it when people come on and sptout absolute bollocks.

Yes op, there is a tablet that can delay it. It's not guaranteed because you have to start taking it three days before and if her periods aren't regular, that can be tricky. I recently used it, but my periods are going a bit mental (peri, I think) - I'd started taking it three days before I was due as per instructions but my period decided to come two days early so it didn't work.

However, I have used it several times in the past and its worked perfectly. My childhood doctor prescribed it when I was a teenager going on a big holiday but that was many years ago - hopefully they still do now!

Also, be aware that if she does take it, it can be a heavier than normal period when she comes off it. For me, that was worth it to be period free on the holiday, but definitely something to be prepared for.

Have you misunderstood (not read) the OP and think she wants to delay her daughter starting her periods?

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 21/05/2025 08:07

@teawithmrstillerman several people have said on here that they've used norethisterone to delay a period before a big event and yet you're claiming we're all lying as no such tablet exists!

OP norethisterone has been used for years. You do have to remember to take it 3 times a day.
