Teen girls sharing clothes

It drives me nuts that teen girls ‘share’ clothes.
it seems more like the alpha girls are taking the best tops and skirts and then bring them back whenever they feel like it. Or never.
does anyone else relate to this?

No..?

I assume this is happening with your DD? If so, why is she still lending her clothes out if it takes so long to get them back?

ipredictariot5 · 05/05/2025 00:14

one of my DD was like this - I still have friends clothes that she won’t let me get rid of even though she borrowed it 5 years ago and the girl has moved away

This brought back some memories for me, both the same girl. One time I bought an expensive white hoodie with my birthday money. Wore it once and she borrowed it, got drunk, lots of grass and vomit stains on it so was totally unwearable (2000s central Scotland we were all drinking dangerously.) I was so gutted as my family were never as well off as many of my peers (despite both parents working, they were young parents and basically on NMW) and I was usually sporting Primark. I'm still gutted when I think about it now 😅.

Another time she totally stole a hoodie and point blank denied it, despite it having the exact same stain on the sleeve and her being a size smaller than me. I ended up just taking it back because I wasn't putting up with her shit. It was never mentioned again once I took It back but we both knew.
It was difficult as we were really close friends and I also used to borrow her (much more expensive trendy) clothes, but I never ruined any of them! Thankfully we grew apart and it taught me never to lend anyone anything 😅. I did also have another friend who slept over and packed several pairs of shoes and other things in her bag which I discovered before she left which was a whole other drama, but that girl used to also take trainers and other things from the PE department whilst people were in class, she's now in prison.

We don't really have this at all, OP. Dd dors borrow clothes and viceversa sometimes but it's in equal measure and they get returned pretty much immediately. Could you contact the parent and ask for the clothes to be returned?

YES! I recently bought my DD (14) a bracelet, which was expensive and next thing she's let her friend 'borrow' it. It's hard to explain that this isn't really on, because she's just being kind and there's a culture of doing this. But, she's on an app called luna (period tracker and other wellbeing things for teens) and she read an article about peer pressure and putting herself first, I think it's helped a little bit with her confidence. So annoying though, I agree massively.

Dd1 does this a lot but only with one other and she’s 17 so buys her own clothes. I don’t really get it but mostly ignore.

I shared lots of clothes with friends at that age and vice versa. DD14 lent a pretty much new brander sports top to a friend and never got it back. The girls fell out shortly after (not about the top). 🔝

Gosh I can still remember the pink sparkly playboy bunny top circa 2002 that I had pestered my mum for for months (god knows why she let me buy it). Friend borrowed it and put it in a dark wash and came out pink and black tie dye, I was utterly devastated.

Reminds me of the time in boarding school when my favourite bra went missing, only for me to see it on my dorm mate whilst she was getting changed…I was shocked. It was a very bright colour with distinct patterns on. And very old. Totally impossible for her to suddenly have the same one. I confronted her, she denied it and then I went to sneak it back when she was out of the room one day. She never mentioned it missing and myself and my other dorm mates were forever weirded out by her after that.
