Teenage boys, hormone related??

My son has just turned 14. Since Christmas he has shot up, looks all tall and gangly, voice starting to change, and he’s generally morphed into Kevin the teenager. Every few weeks there is a day or two when he wakes up and just says he doesn’t feel well, can’t put his finger on it. He looks really pale, has slight diarrhoea and feels sickly,he then goes back to bed and sleeps all day and feels fine the following day. I would say it’s happened at least three times since Xmas. It could be coincidence that he appears to be going through a growth spurt too but I wondered if it could be hormone related? Anyone have experience of boys hormone symptoms? I think I’ll put an appointment on at the doctors anyhow.

My son is 13 and very similar in that he has periods of time were he complains of tummy issues for a few days, then all is ok again for a while, then bad again. Could it be that he has IBS induced by puberty?

My son (12) had bouts of feeling unwell recently, coupled with pains in knees and all down legs. As soon as he shot up (way past me!) he was so much better. So I assume it’s all related to them growing.

Im not saying this is what happens to your boy but, as my hubby always says, teenage lads can be minging 🙈
My cousin was like this. But he really was minging. Played a lot of sports, would pick his spotty face, dive in the loo for a quick wee etc. Then he would be poorly. We thought maybe he was just doing too much with sport and overworking.
Turns out he would forget to wash his hands, but especially before eating. 🤢 so god know what was on them.
now his immune system must be amazing now that years have passed 😆

I have a just turned 14 year old few weeks back he gets days like this aswell but still hasn’t grown much to his disappointment lol My older boys in their 20’s probably had days like this but as they’ll tell you now I ignored them and sent them to school anyway saying was nothing wrong with them and that the younger lot get away with everything 😂

LieInsAreExtinct · 01/05/2025 19:12

It certainly happened to my son and I put it down to school related anxiety. He does still sometimes say he doesn't feel well (now 20) but he has a shocking diet, sleep/eat pattern and smoking habit, so I'm not surprised!
Worth a trip to GP if you're worried, and he's willing.

Alwaysinamood · 01/05/2025 19:18

Might be worth a blood test, just in case, as it sounds like he could be deficient in iron. How is his diet?

Simplelobsterhat · 01/05/2025 19:37

Could it be migraines? I don't know about boys but most of the women in my family get them, usually starting with hormone changes in teens. Headaches are the more common symptom, but stomach complaints and needing to sleep then feeling fine next day sounds very familiar ! Worth getting checked out either way way. If it is that there is preventative medication you can take on first symptoms which saved GCSE exams for my sister!

I've no idea if this could be puberty related but if you haven't already done so, get him checked out by his GP. It's likely to be nothing but could be lots of medical things that can be treated eg. Low iron, low vitamin D. It could be post viral if he has been unwell or a food intolerance. Maybe keep a food diary.
Also monitor if there is a pattern to illness - is it related to certain lessons at school, is he avoiding something or someone. Also consider if there is a pattern to the activities he has done beforehand, if it's related to post viral illness he may be overdoing it and then suffering afterwards.
Encourage a good diet, plenty of water and regular bedtimes even at weekends.

My 14 year old can be a bit like this too one day feeling unwell in bed all day and fine the next day. Ive put it down to hormones as he’s grown from 5ft 6 to 6ft 2 in 12 months and looks like a man 😳 If in doubt take him to the doctors even just to reassure yourself.

Fairyladyonwheels · 01/05/2025 19:59

My son just turn 15, grown so much in the last few years, no issues part from super hungry. It doesn't sound normal so maybe get some blood tests to check everything.

I remember all sorts of things going on in the teen years that don’t happen now, I think all those hormones ramping up and changing us from kids to adults will cause all kinds of side effects. Just look at how menopause affects women

TartanMammy · 01/05/2025 21:36

Could it be a hangover? Or after effects from other substances? Is there a pattern as to when he feels like this?

flippyfloppy · 01/05/2025 22:57

Sorry about the delay in replying and thank you for all the messages. He woke up about 2pm starving and has seemed fine since. Interesting about the headaches, he has complained about headaches in the past over the years intermittently. And last time it started with a headache. Diet wise certainly not as good as it used to be, skips breakfast and gets something morning break, has lunch at a local cafe close to school or a meal deal for lunch then dinner later. He eats a variety of food and lots of protein but I struggle to get much fruit and veg in him these days! No concerns about it being substance related, he was with us all last night and him and his friends are more interested in mountain biking and the gym at the minute thankfully. Think I’ll see if I can persuade to go the doctors maybe get bloods checked. Appreciate everyone’s advice.
