My 14 year old keeps going dizzy when she stands up also lightheaded when she sometimes sitting. She has had an ECG and was tested for pots and everything was fine. Any ideas what this is?

Hi

sorry to hear about your daughter.
is she tall ?
The same things happened to my son but he also used to collapse, luckily we got an episode on CCTV so could show the doctors.
They put his down to his height and advised to use more salt in his diet.
not the best diagnosis but fair he does seem a lot better now a few years on x

Kwiseman · 25/04/2025 10:10

Not really about 5ft 3, I just really don’t know where to turn.

Keep on at the doctors and ask for referral if needed x

My dd had recurring dizzy spells and blood tests showed she was low in iron and vit d and prescribed supplements - this helped enormously.

Kwiseman · 25/04/2025 12:21

At the moment they putting it down to anxiety x

I’ve had this since in can remember (34 now)
no cause , random times , happens to my mum and grandma too .

It’s more common if I’ve been sat on the floor, it’s hot, hot shower

most of the time if I sit back down or stand still for a moment it goes away .
I few time I have fainted briefly

watchuswreckthemic · 25/04/2025 13:01

Low iron was the cause for my daughter of the same age

Staywithmemyblood · 26/04/2025 04:42

It was due to low iron for my DD too. Has your DD had hers checked?

PlugUgly1980 · 26/04/2025 04:55

Low blood pressure and low iron. I use to faint in school assemblies at that age if standing too long, and even now in my 40s if I stand up too quickly, it’s warm, I’ve not had enough to drink, bend down to tie my shoes laces etc. all cause me to be light headed and dizzy. I take iron tablets daily, drink loads and have just learnt to take a moment when standing up if everything starts to spin and my vision goes. Usually just pausing a moment or lowering my head is enough to bring it back to normal. Sometimes left with a slight nauseous feeling but disappears quickly. For context I’ve always been fit and healthy (active, sporty, runner) and have naturally low blood pressure and resting heart rate, combined with heavy periods when result in low ferritin, and it’s the combination which causes it.

BunnyRuddington · 26/04/2025 07:39

Has she had her iron and Vitamin levels checked? That seems like a simple thing for the GP to rule out.

Is she keeping herself hydrated too?

Kwiseman · 26/04/2025 07:56

She had her bloods done in Feb her folic acid was border line. Doc won’t do another blood test yet I find very frustrating.

My daughter had this, I googled it and apparently it can just be a teenage hormone thing. She is now 17 and seems to have just outgrown it.

Kwiseman · 26/04/2025 08:24

Thank you for this, everything is going through my head at the minute x

My DD used to have this and we never really got to the bottom of what was causing it. Like your DD had loads of tests but nothing ever conclusive came out of them. She’s 17 now and seems to have grown out of it.

mamaduckbone · 26/04/2025 08:36

My ds had the same problem - multivitamins really helped.

Cynic17 · 26/04/2025 08:41

This used to happen to me as a teenager. Nobody made a fuss about it in those days, and I grew out of it after a couple of years.

I doubt she needs a blood test, and I wouldn't br wasting the GP's time about it.

BunnyRuddington · 26/04/2025 08:51

Have a read of this guide from the Caroline Walker Trust if she’s faint. It could just be that you both need to make a couple of tweaks either her diet and fluid intake to get her back on track Smile

Kwiseman · 30/04/2025 14:57

Thank you to everyone who commented, her blood pressure drops slightly when standing but going for blood test.

The ranges in nhs blood tests aren’t really great as the level for a teenage girl wil be different to say, a 40 year old male. If it was borderline then it will be low. Maybe try Spatone iron which is all natural, could also be blood sugar related if she’s having sugar spikes and massive sugar drops

Jowak1 · 01/05/2025 19:59

My daughter who is also 14 sometimes has dizzy spells headache and feels faint . She had bloods done and they were all fine. I remember her brother at around the same age having headaches and then them just going and the doctor put it down to hormones so with my daughters bloods being ok I think it must be hormonal ?!?
