Did DS do the correct thing?

DS is in Year 12 and told me that he felt really sorry for a girl in his class. They aren't friends though, just an acquaintance.

As he's now learnt she's been going through a breakup and has been feeling horrible the past few weeks. On a school trip she'd been feeling down, so someone else told DS to hug her. The girl looked at DS and said "Yes please, I'd really liked one!" so he hugged her.

The next week this girl burst into tears outside of class and had to leave the area as to not embarrass herself further. The same boy told DS to hug this girl but she walked off before anything could happen. Later on at lunch DS had a chat with the girl (she'd calmed down and was a bit more smiley). He said he would have hugged her but he was worried she'd push him away, the girl laughed and said she wouldn't have because that would have been awkward for her as well. She then she wouldn't mind another hug and he gave her one.

DS was telling me "I felt so sorry for her mum. She was sobbing." DS feels a bit weird because we're actually family friends with the girl's ex. (I know his parents). He's still friends with that girl's ex.

Why do other people keep telling your DS to hug this girl? Quite bizarre OP and not really appropriate

Agreed. That's literally the only thing I could focus on in your post. If he wanted to give her a hug that's a nice thing to do but why is he listening to others telling him to hug this girl, that's really odd.

This stood out to me too. That boy sounds weird quite frankly.

Yes I thought so too. The second time this boy did it DS told me he found it weird being "told" to hug this crying girl when he wasn't sure if she wanted one or not. The boy was like "Go give her a hug"

Your DS needs to tell the other boy to mind their own business. Whatever is going on is strange, I'd advise him to keep out of it.
