Fashion for 16yr old boys

ItsWheelieNana · 11/02/2025 09:04

My DS has recently turned 16, he has additional needs and goes to a specialist school.

Fashion isn't on his radar - out of school he lives in Adidas tracksuit bottoms/hoodie/T-shirts and he has done for years.

He'll be going to a big college in Sept and I want to get him some new clothes that'll help him 'fit in'!

So what are your 16yr old boys wearing currently?

Following as I am in a similar situation .

My 17yo lives in cargo's, generally dark colours mostly jeans but has some heavy cotton type ones. Big logos on tops are a no no for him, so keep it plain. He layers his tops a lot, long sleeve T-shirts under an undone casual linen type shirt. Shoes, he lives in his converse but again they are either the plain black high tops or the black high top with white sole.

I think the main thing is to keep it plain and play it by ear when he starts to make friend maybe ask what sort of thing they wear.

Are you able to walk/drive past the college at the start / end of day or lunchtime to see what the others are wearing?
I imagine what's fashionable for college students will vary greatly across the country.

Mine doesn’t like the sporty branded jogger / hoody look.

He goes for Hollister jeans and trousers (mostly because he can get those in his waist/leg length) with knitted jumpers over a plain T-shirt mostly - from Uniqlo and Hollister. He likes Uniqlo a lot actually. Good for simple plain stuff. He’s a fan of plain hollister hoodies because he thinks they’re cosy, and has a couple of T-shirts from Aubin that he likes. He’s got a few shirts that he wears open over plain T-shirts. He’s tends to stick to a fairly muted colour palette so things mix and match navy, brown, burgundy, greens. Vans trainers are his go to for shoes.

My son is all about baggy jeans (he really likes Polar via Vinted as they're expensive!) he likes sweats and hoodies and likes Aries, Stussy, urban outfitters (again all via Vinted) and just wears plain t shirts from Uniqlo.

ALso I would add what your don wears is what about 90% of the boys around here already wear :)

It's in Surrey if that makes a difference.

Trackies, trackies and more trackies
Occasional cargo pants if feeling a bit smarter
Uniqlo is a good shout

newbeggins · 11/02/2025 14:19

Have a look in H+M you won't be standing out too much but it will be trend led.

Comefromaway · 11/02/2025 14:26

Addidas tracksuit, hoodies & t shirts sounds perfect.

My son like converse (they feel right") Other of his friends live in Nike.

You've then got the Weekend Offender/CP Company/Stone Island knock offs brigade.

The other common attire is jeans and a band t shirt.

Trainers are either Addidas Sambas/Speziales, Nike Air Force 1's, Converse, Vans or DMs.

LarkspurLane · 11/02/2025 14:34

Will you be going for a look around when there might be children there?
Round us, it's all black clothing, black tracksuits, black t-shirts, Northface or fake Northface jackets.
I was somewhere else recently and saw a lot of Under Armour and Stussy Lucky 8 Ball fakes (presumably). For some kids (mine), brand really matters, for others it's not a thing.
Adidas tracksuits/hoodies absolutely fine at the start, he might then want some other stuff or he might be happy to stay where he is.

As others have said, I don't think you can go far wrong with Uniqlo. DS (17) lives in it! He especially likes the baggy joggers and hoodies. It's mostly all plain too so your DS wouldn't stand out too much if it's not "right" and should just be a slightly more fashion focus of your DS's current joggers and hoodies.

Get him to have a poke about on Vinted too, see if anything catches his eye. DS has a big Vinted habit, especially for "vintage" (ie. from the early 2000s 🙄) sweatshirts but he's also got some great bargains on branded stuff, like Cahartt. It might be a cheap and eco friendly way for your DS to try out some different styles.

My ds is 16, he wears baggy jeans, and likes either baggy hoodies from urban outfitters, or a baggy shirt open with plain t shirt underneath. All about the baggy 😂

thismummydrinksgin · 11/02/2025 14:56

I think Primark clothes are fairly safe style wise, lap won't go wrong in sports wear at that age. My 16 year old likes Lyle and Scott, Luke and Fred Perry but probably a bit over the top price wise if he's not bothered for brands .
