Watching with interest!

Congratulations to your dd.

Congrats. My son passed a few weeks ago, we went with Hastings and he has his own insurance (black box) with both myself and DH as named drivers on my car, cost £1200. I have my own insurance on the car too but now rarely get to drive it, but we knew this would be the case and specifically bought an Aygo as we felt it was safer for a new driver. If he chooses not to go to Uni he can then use savings and buy his own car, but we saw no point in having a 3rd car sitting on the drive when we mostly only need one for DH and myself anyway.

Miloarmadillo2 · 21/12/2024 15:19

We have a Marmalade policy with black box for my son to drive an Aygo. It is cheaper if you start policy in about 3 weeks, add a parent with a clean licence as additional driver. The black box app has actually been really good to give feedback on driving - it deducts points for harsh braking, accelerating, cornering etc. It was £100/m for a newly passed 17 yr old boy.

WombatChocolate · 21/12/2024 15:21

Hastings is often the cheapest for new drivers, and will have a black box.

Agree with considering if your DC really needs their own car? Can your family manage with 2 between you? If so, DC can probably be a named driver (as long as not doing the majority of the miles)

Yes to looking at small engines and group 1 or 2 if choosing a car.

Looking at models less popular with teens can also make it cheaper. Everyone looks at Aygo, VW Up etc. something like Suzuki Swift or small Skoda might be cheaper to insure.

Run lots of different cars through insurance comparison sites.

The other big thing to bring insurance down is to get quotes for 2-3 weeks away, rather than tomorrow. You can save hundreds by doing this.

DS is insured with Insure the Box, comes in well below £1k and they reward good driving. Obviously (by the name) a black box is required.

Xelda · 21/12/2024 15:41

We used Ticker and have just renewed with them. We have a black box. Good communication, you can't call, you can only message but they get back to you really quickly. The renewal was £600 cheaper this year.

Thankyou all for your replies it’s greatly appreciated . My dd has a car Honda jazz

If my oh and I add ourselves to the insurance with a black box does the box apply to parents as well as my dd ?

We went with Hastings for my sons VW Up. It was 1400 with a black box. Myself and DH are named drivers on my son's policy. When you set the black box up you can opt out of being monitored if you or husband is driving. The black box is great. We know exactly where he is 🤣

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 24/12/2024 13:51

When DS passed at 17 we did searches on the comparison sites with him as the policy holder. It came out at about £2,000 for a 12 year old, 1.2 Vauxhall Agila, with both parents as named drivers with Admiral. The cheapest black box policy was about £300 cheaper, and as DS had saved and was paying himself, he decided to pay the higher amount not to have a black box.

We were in agreement with this, as we didn't want to restrict his or our driving by having one for the sake of £300. I didn't realise we could opt out, however, I think for us it was the right decision as he often works late and would have been restricted too much with it.

It's all a bit horses for courses, depending on who is using the car and how/when it is used. Hopefully he will have a years NCD next year, so will go down in price. Although my own insurance has gone up £100 this year, despite shopping around and no changes in circumstances, which I understand is quite common at the moment due to various reasons given by the insurance industry, but don't want to derail the thread 😬

SootherSue · 24/12/2024 14:28

I've known Admiral to be reasonable the first year, but go back to comparison sites when it's time to renew as they shoot up afterwards.

Aviva do discounts with their multicar insurance if you happen to be with them already. But make sure you get the correct type of policy as (I think) Aviva Online policies can't be added to it.

Yes, applies to the driver at the time, at least DS black box with Admiral did, I’m sorry to say whenever DH or I drove it, we didn’t score as high as when DS drove it, obviously we have picked up bad habits along the way……..

WombatChocolate · 24/12/2024 17:04

Hastings black box monitors the main driver via an app on the phone. Named drivers are not moniored.
When my DS passed, he didn’t have his own car, but drove my DHs when he was at home from uni. To get the insurance at a reasonable price, we had Hastings with black box. We’re surprised to hear 50 year old DH would be monitored but not 18 yr old DS. Checked with Hastings as it seemed daft. They sighed as they get asked it a lot, but confirmed, yes DH as main driver woukd be monitored despite driving over 30 years.

So DH had to be careful not to ‘corner’ or break sharply coming up to roundabouts. It was fine. He scored well through the year. DS drove a bit in the Uni hols when home to keep his hand in. When it came to renewal when he was 19, we were told no black box needed anymore due to good scores.

No doubt when DS has his own car and is main driver for insurance, it will be sensible for him. But he will be 21/22 by then, have been driving 4/5 years and have been a named driver for several, which many insurers give a discount for. He might have to have a black box himself..,or not. Who knows. But it’s fine.

Theres a headline in the Times today about young drivers ‘fronting’ ie having parents as main driver when actually it’s the kid’s car and the parent rarely drives. This is obviously a problem and illegal and insurers won’t pay out if they know it’s happening …..typically if the adult claiming it’s their car is also the main driver on another car. But being a genuine named teenager driver inna parents car is often a good way to drive as a teen, if they just need occasional use.

mrsnjw · 24/12/2024 17:06

Definitely would want mine or my husbands driving monitored 😂.

Xurlywhirly · 24/12/2024 17:09

Cheaper here with Admiral with NO BLACKBOX! bizarre but that's what happened and she doesn't have to be paranoid now about any slight acceleration or braking necessary to get out of trouble just because of blackbox worries.

I was strongly advised to go no blackbox and glad we didn't.

spiderlight · 24/12/2024 17:09

Admiral were the cheapest for our DS in September, in our old Skoda.

socks1107 · 24/12/2024 17:20

With my eldest we went with marmalade.
This time I've added both girls as named drivers on my car. They are both at uni so share my little car and it keeps the cost low.
They won't build no claims but it was affordable and the best way to do it
