Hi my dd started uni in sept she’s rarely sick however she’s home for Xmas and isn’t well
I’ve just phoned the Dr to be told that she should have registered at a surgery where her uni is
& that she can register temporarily at our family surgery.
This is fine but will the Surgery accept her back as a permanent patient when she leaves uni & is it easy to book an appointment with our family Dr if she comes home sick ?
Thank goodness we rarely visit the Dr but when I just spoke to the receptionist after holding on for 20 mins was told that I’d have to phone back at 2pm for an afternoon appointment

The NHS has really gone to pot making everything so difficult bring back the good old days when you’d go to the surgery and wait your turn

I agree this has always been a PITA. We have come across the same issues. With DD1 we had to argue that it made no sense to change as she was home for longer than away, as she had short terms. DD2 did change, but then only needed GP in the summer when she was at home, and they wouldn't see her. She put off a lot of issues due to this.

She has therefore gone private, or to walk-ins for the last few years, bonkers really, because private is all on-line, so what's the difference? They don't see you either, and our GP only ever calls anyway.

I think GP's need to change this system in a modern world of healthcare, where 90% of it takes place remotely.

I understand that you can only register with a GP if you are in their catchment area, so if she lives at home when she has finished uni she should be able to re-register.

Not sure if it something to do with where your records are kept, or to do with GPs being funded based on the number of patients registered.

It's always been the case that you have to register with a GP while you're at uni. She might not even come back home when she graduates so cross that bridge when you come to it!

mondaytosunday · 20/12/2024 14:58

@MiddleAgedDread not it's not. My DD has not registered near her uni she's still on the books at her home GP. How would they know if she'd moved anyway? Her home address is her permanent address.
You can stay with a GP even if you've moved out of the area. You just have to sign that you acknowledge you could not have home visits (like when do they ever happen). I stayed with my old one for eight years after I moved.

MagpiePi · 21/12/2024 10:06

@mondaytosunday Maybe it is different where you live but when my son moved to a flat about 2 miles from the family home and went to change his address with the GP, they said he was out of their catchment area and would have to find a new GP.

I’ve just looked and they can refuse to take you on if that is their policy.

Jellycat70 · 21/12/2024 14:29

Yes they can but more the fool me telling them She’s at uni , she could go to a walk in clinic at uni . My Dr surgery is bursting with patients I’m just worried that they won’t take her back when she finishes uni

presumably she will be 21 when she leaves uni, so she should be capable of sorting out a GP practice registration herself?
