Car insurance for a learner

Just had a little shock.

DC2 has a Provisional Licence and wants me to add them to my policy as a learner driver.

Churchill are quoting me an additional £949.

I'm sure that I only paid £80 for the year when I added DC1. It was a different car and a different insurance provider and it was 2 years ago but things can't have changed that much can they?

So how do I go about insuring DC2 as a learner on my car?

I added DD as a temp driver last year for 2 months and it was £77 for 2 months, also Churchill. Small hatchback.

edited - it wasn't last year, it was earlier this year - summer time.

Get a stand alone policy instead for the teen on your car. We used collingwood as her driving instructor gave us a referral discount and it was £122 for six months Cover.

I had the same shock by the way as they wanted triple our current policy cost to “add” them onto our existing policy on 16yr car!

TinyMouseTheatre · 02/12/2024 16:48

Thank you both. I'll look into stand alone policies once I've recovered from fainting Grin

It cost me £160 to add my learner daughter, she is 23, it’s for a Fiat 500. Much more than her sister from 5 or 6 years ago.

TinyMouseTheatre · 02/12/2024 19:02

Have just phoned Churchill instead of doing it online and they say that the quote of an extra £947 is correct!

Adrian Flux is good for learners. I bought DC2 a car as learner this year (small VW 8 years old) and comprehensive cover for 12 months with a provisional licence was less than £200 for the year.

Alpinesnoozer · 02/12/2024 19:09

Veygo - about £36 a month.

My dd recently passed her test, I have a Ford kuga, to put her on the insurance was going to cost £14,000 (no, that isn't a typo), to get her onto insurance she'll need to buy a low powered run around which right now we can't really afford, having her driving would be useful but not essential.

CandleStub · 02/12/2024 19:17

DS was about £50 per annum as a learner, £2k when he passed (it always goes up massively then for obvious reasons).

£949 seems nuts. Are you sure they have recorded him as a learner?

Jingle10thWay · 02/12/2024 21:46

Yeah you need a specialist policy it’s so much cheaper when they learning and everyone else I know had to get a 1L cheapie car once they pass and it’s goes to £2k for first year in their own name. My DD is hoping to pass her test in Jan-Feb but we can’t afford an extra car so she’ll need to wait until June and A’Levels to finish to fund it working more hours in her job.

Littletreefrog · 02/12/2024 21:47

Try Collingwood.

Yeah I phoned to double check. Seems bonkers to me too. That's roughly what we paid after DS passed his test.

Sounds about right Ds was extra 900 which went up to 1400 when he passed his test.

This year it's gone down by £400

mozzrules · 02/12/2024 22:17

Use veygo and just pay for the times when you're actually taking them out driving. Much, much cheaper and you can also do the same after they pass, if they aren't using the car on a regular basis. It's their own policy rather than yours.

creamsnugjumper · 02/12/2024 22:17

Admiral do a special learner policy, it's about £150. One he passes that's a whip other battle to become decent prices.

And they wonder why we have so many uninsured drivers on the roads.
