I’m sure this must come up all the time did a quick search for up to date threads but couldn’t find anything.

Looking for a lightweight warm waterproof winter coat (no lockers so have to carry round all day), what are your teen boys wearing to school?

14yo DS will reluctantly wear his waterproof coat if it's pouring with rain, otherwise nothing over his blazer Hmm He insists that he doesn't feel the cold (despite wandering around the house in an Oddie and having a locker at school). He refuses to wear his warm coat so I've prioritised waterproofing.

This is the one he wears: Trespass Trolamul
This is the one he refuses to wear unless it's minus 20:

The main thing is will they wear it? After countless £££ spent on coats I have given up. If it gets really cold DS will wear a hoodie under his blazer and take it off once he gets to school. If it rains I presume he just gets wet.

If you think it won't be money wasted then anything Berghaus or North Face will probably be acceptable.

Teenagers become waterproof about 2 weeks into year 7 and no longer need coats of any kind during the week. They might use an umbrella for a week or two before they lose it, but heaven forfend they go to lost property and look for it.

I've got one in year 12 who is just thinking about wearing a coat now. The two at uni have about 3 coats each, so IME they do grow out of it.

Hopefully the second link works here: Trespass Quaintonring. It's a lovely coat but only to be worn in Arctic conditions and if I physically dress him in it like a toddler.

Round here all teenagers do wear coats but sadly they're not cheap (or rather they are as they're often fakes.

DS has a mountain equipment one which was best part of £200 but has worn it loads over last 2 years. Black, padded with a hood. Bit bulky but surprisingly light. I'll see if I can find a link as they probably still do the same one.

I agree with the question of whether or not he’ll wear it. I agree with the poster who said that about 2 weeks into year 7, boys become weatherproof but ime they return to human form in year 12 and enjoy a cosy coat. Year 7 to 11 boys can be persuaded to wear touchscreen gloves and a beanie on very cold days.

Peasinthefreezer · 18/11/2024 19:47

Thanks all will check the links. They don’t wear blazers so think they need something on the really cold days 😬

His sister is at the school already and she will wear a black puffa jacket when it gets really cold.

If the weather warrants more than a blazer, mine wears an insulated, waterproof Jack Wolfskin jacket. It's light, warm, waterproof, and not particularly bulky for what it is.

DD is in a co-ed 6th form at a boy's school and most boys, incl. younger years, wear simple black coats from various outdoor shops.

DD has a unisex Peter Storm waterproof and a black Decathlon warmer coat. Similar ones are also worn by her male Explorer friends.

cansu · 25/11/2024 20:17

Most teen boys who do wear coats wear black or grey plain ones like the one linked to. If it looks warm they are not interested.

My son would only entertain a Napapijri coat. I got a fleece lined pullover style from eBay and then found M&Mdirect had them and got a thin but padded one.
The kids all seem to wear no coat, Napapijri or Zavetti Canada.
My daughter wears no coat but carries a waterproof in her bag for emergencies!
Edited to add my other son (13) doesn't care for brands but also mostly coat refuses but will take his lovely warm padded Asda coat on forest school days but he's at a specialist school and I don't think the kids there care for brands much. The not-needing-a-coat thing seems to apply to both my neurotypical and SEN kids so I think the waterproof from year 7 theory is pretty much fact.
