Aging and what next

I'm thinking to prepare myself for the next stage in our lives if children leave home what are their priorities that might be for me and my husband

Aging and pre retiring stage - i am fearing to be weak and aging ...

You don't have to be weak
Get out there and find some new exercise hobbies that strengthen you, core and weights and cardio all contribute to better morbidity and will prevent muscle wasting and falls.

That is my priority, along with seeing plenty of friends and family for emotional connection and support, continuing to work to keep my brain active and also for the interest and social aspect.

How old are you out of interest?

newtothis15 · 26/11/2024 16:47

Nearly 50

Rather over 50 myself

Probably fitter than many half my age

Weight training and balance ( yoga or Pilates ) are excellent for keeping you going as you get older

As you near retirement think about what you want to do with the rest of your life . Start with the assumption that you will be fit and healthy and active for another 20 plus years - so what are your interest and hobbies and what will you do to contribute to society

I find it hard to see myself aging mentally

Do you mean you find it hard to have a mental image of yourself older ( why would you want that ?)

Or do you find yourself worrying about how your mind might change ?

With the later - physical exercise, social interaction, volunteering and a mental challenging activity ( learn a language ) will all help

A spring chicken!
I don't think any of us can see ourselves aging really
Like when you have a baby you can't imagine it being a teenager or an adult

It is entirely natural to think about these things, but at your age you have so much time to do something about it! When my dcs left home I took up cycling and I love it, now I have taken up rowing. I do pilates, yoga and weights and walk miles every day. Physically I am in better shape than I was in my 30s and I'm 60! My Dad is 87 and still walks over 1.5 hrs a day and is fit as a fiddle, my Mum is similar

What do you currently do to keep fit? What sort of things do you like doing?

Friends, volunteering and holidays would be my top 3.
Plus work, if you still want to work.
Read lots of books, go to galleries, keep your brain engaged. Honestly, there is so much to keep you busy.... you'll wonder how to fit everything in.
