Adding son to insurance so I can give him driving lessons

He will have mainly official driving school lessons, but I also want to take him out for practice in my car. How much (approximately) does this cost? I can't find any comparison site that will let me calculate this...

We used a by the hour one called something like Veyo while she was learning. There were a few, but that made most sense. When she passed her test we moved to Marmalade where she has a black box and charges her per mile.

Google learner insurance, it's better than having him on your insurance. Companies such as Marmalade & others. You can take it out for a month,3 months, whatever & stop it for a while (eg for holidays or exam periods).

Do learner insurance via Marmalade or similar

StarGirrrl77 · 02/10/2024 14:50

Thank you! Looking at Marmalade right now

We used Collingwood Insurance and it was about £150 for 24 weeks (ish). Can't remember exact amount.

Marmalade was ridiculously expensive for us (think they wanted around £800 for the same cover as Collingwood). And then when he passed his test, they quoted £17,000 for the year with a black box. I think they go off area so some companies are better in one area than others.

My car has me as main driver, Dh and DS 18 who passed last year…I rang up last week to add Ds2 who is now 17 and the premium went down by £49!!
no idea how that works, I’d been worried they wouldn’t let 2 teens on it.

id try your own insurance first. For DS1 it went up massively and we had to change providers and have a black box once he passed, swapped away from black box once he’d been driving for a year.

defo get him out with you, ds1 did lots of driving practice and parking with me and I think it really helped.

We use Veygo and pay £90 a month which renews every month until my son passes his test. He had driving lessons until his instructor said he was safe for me to be in the car with him and now he drives all the time whenever he and I go anywhere together. I would definitely recommend Veygo.

We added DS onto our own policy (LV) and it cost £1200 on a fairly new Mini. No black box or anything like that.

Definitely this! Look for specialty learner insurance.

We used the RAC for learner insurance ( add on ) last year for my daughter , it was much cheaper than Marmalade / AA etc .

FortyFacedFuckers · 02/10/2024 18:11

My sons was around £300 for a year, went up to over £3000 when he passed

StartingOverInMy40s · 02/10/2024 18:19

We use Collingwood and it costs around £50 a month plus it doesn't impact my own insurance if it was to have an accident as it she was him on the car.

mitogoshigg · 02/10/2024 18:22

I paid £110 for the year but dd was 20 and it was 3 years ago
