Car Insurance for 17 year olds?

Hi everyone, looking for some advice if anyone has been in a similar position.

My son is 17 and learning to drive, with his test booked for a few weeks time.

I have a 4 year old corsa that i was planning to insure him on so he could use it when i didnt need it.
I assumed as the car wasnt expensive and thats a normal 'entry level' type car this would be fine to insure, but ive had a quote of £4300 to insure him on it when he passes 😱

So im wondering if I would be better changing the car to something else thats cheaper to insure. I dont want to be driving around in an old banger or worrying about his safety so it still needs to be fairly modern and new, but it doesnt need to be a big car.

Any ideas on the best car to go for, or any experience in getting cheaper insurance for him? I think its important that he keeps driving once he passes to keep the skill, and he is still at school so cant pay for it himself, his part time job doesnt earn him much.

There are specialist brokers offering help to insure young people. I was advised not to use a comparison site.
Not sure where you got the quote, but it might be worth looking at brokers, they may not actually quote until he has passed his test.

We got temporary learners insurance for DS with Collingwood. I am going to see if they will cover when he passes as they were really reasonable.

Not sure of the corsa engine size so this may not apply to you but when DD passed her test she saved up and bought a Citroen C1 (small 1l engine). Comparison websites all quoted ridiculous prices and insisted on black boxes. We went on the direct line website and they insured her for £78 per month and no black box. Might be worth a look x

Take a look at Direct Line.

My DD has been with them from the age of 17 and has always had a policy in her own name. The first year was around £1200 (no box). The second year after passing her test it was around £1500, and this was using their Drive Sure App which you use on your phone. Not too bad on price, and this is fully comp too.

Engine size does play a part, and she drives a Hyundai i10. DH did quite a bit of research before we bought the car, and this came up as one of the best for learners / new drivers to insure.

Having said that, boys do seem notoriously more expensive to insure. I am already stockpiling wine in readiness for the shock of my son being quoted in a couple of year's time! 😂
