Reusable period products - it's a minefield..!!..

Hello
I've been googling resuable sanitory products, mainly period pants as my dd is starting secondary school next week and I need her to be prepared as I'm sure she's on the verge of starting her periods.
I'm out of the loop having used a moon cup for my twenties and thirties, followed by a hysterectomy so no idea on brands etc etc.
She's tall for her age, very slim.

What do you all buy for your dd's? Is one brand better than another? They seem to all cater for heavy flows..
I did buy her a pair of Sloggi shorts style ones but they are hiding in a drawer as she wasn't impressed at all.
Are there any to avoid? Or some more teen friendly than others? I'd be most grateful for any guidance.
Thank you

DD wears Modibodi since she started her period when she was 12, the first sets, now (4.5 years later), needing replacing.
No leaks, no soiled bedding.

They have a teen range but DD was tall for her age and the oldest size is the same as size 8 in the adult. Adult is less colourful though. They come in various cuts, she has the bikini ones, the same still she wears for normal knickers.

She wears the ones for heavier flow during school days so she doesn't need to change, they hold 8 hours with no problem. The same when she is out the whole day, at the stable or with the Scouts.

Their swim wear is also great, two of DD's friends used the suits for club swimming with no issues and one is now a life guard and wears them.

Thanks very much for your reply @reluctantbrit . I’ve heard of modibodi, good to have a positive real life review.
Ill have a look at them today

Basing this on my own experience, the M&S ones are a mixed bag - some of the styles don't come up far enough and leak easily.

Modibodi is good but pricey, and also Primark are surprisingly reliable.

Festivalmitch · 29/08/2024 18:01

Thanks @virgocatlover . I’ve bought a pack of cheapy ones from Primark which can at least stay in her school bag for emergencies

I agree with M&S. I also found that they smell a lot faster, I think their lining is less good for heavy to medium days but OK for lighter ones.

Primark - every time I look they are out of stock in my local shop. The same with the Sainsbury ones.

I'm obviously old but what's wrong with tampons?

Pixilicious1 · 29/08/2024 20:42

I’d recommend Modibidi. My daughter uses the max ones and they last all day. She prefers the black bikini ones for school.
ther often have offers on so look out for those as they are pricey. She has some of the
more colourful (ie cheaper in the sale!) ones for the weekend when she doesn’t have PE!

we haven’t tried the swimwear but a friend’s daughter is a swimming instructor and she uses them and rates them highly.

Not all girls want to / can use them at first. Daft question.

Op we had period pants from primark, Dts found them bulky 'like wearing a napoy'. They are ok with morbid but for now prefer pads. Let her try a range of things.

Not sure why you have to be rude.

I bought dd some period pants but when she started she hated the feeling of 'leaking'. So she has used tampons from the start with period pants over the top on heavy days and overnight.

ShakespearesSisters · 29/08/2024 20:51

My daughter has the cheeky wipes boyfriend style brief ones. We had a bikini pair but she felt they give her a wedgie. We got the size 8 adults which seem to be a good fit for her and she is rather slim.
She wears them full time as hates the feeling of discharge between periods. She adds a disposable pad at the moment when on her period in the morning. Removes at lunchtime then just uses the pants until bed.

TheRainItRaineth · 29/08/2024 20:55

Another vote for Modibodi here.

vdbfamily · 29/08/2024 20:56

my girls both chose styles from cheeky wipes and are very happy with them. They do good offers too.

WessexPrincess · 29/08/2024 20:57

My 14yr old has primark ones and would recommend them. They come in a range of absorbancies and she's found them comfortable and not had any leaks

Nothing but DD was 12 and hated the idea of inserting them, even with the applicator. School toilets are also grim and compared to a period pant, the tampon needs changing during the day.

She reluctantly learnt to use tampons for swimming but it's definitely not her ideal scenario.

I found that I can't use tampons since giving birth and period pants made my life so much easier when I started on unpredictable periods.

My DD wears Cheeky Pants period pants. She has 6 pairs and is very happy with them. In M&S one day last year I spotted a 3-pack of period pants that are boxer style they were a bargain so I bought them and she likes them too. I keep a lidded bucket in the bathroom and she puts worn ones in there, I fill with cold water and then when there's a few pairs I rinse them through and pop in the wash. I wash them in our normal wash (ie. not separately) at 40 degrees and I never use fabric softener anyway. Air dry (I have a dehumidifier which helps if they're not on the line). Never had any issues with them and DD is very comfortable and happy with them.
