Are these platform Doc Martens suitable for school?

LavenderLxx · 23/08/2024 14:34

My 15 year old son wants to have these platform Doc Martens for school…
These ones What do you think?

They are £99 so more than his usual school shoes but Clarks were £60 so he’s offering to pay the difference.

Do you think they’re ok for school? He’s quite quirky and alternative so they match his style. Husband thinks they’re too big and heavy and he’ll have fun made of him (It’s a new school as we’ve moved due to bullying issues so don’t want things like shoes to be another excuse to be picked on - but my son is adamant they’re ok…)

I'd say not - the regular sole ones would be fine/great but I think the platform soles particularly on a boy would probably open the doors for some teasing...

But if you explain this and they're still what he wants...they're expensive though on that link they're £170!!

My 15 year old wears those to school and as far as i know has never had any issue. They wear them out of school too so we're getting our money's worth!

I'm not sure with a new school whether it would be better to stick with something more neutral until they suss things out though.

bergamotorange · 26/08/2024 06:59

At age 15 parents should not be projecting their own fears about 'teasing' onto young people.

A 15yo needs to decide for themselves. Some people want to hide, some people want to wear what they want. A parent has to let older children navigate this their own way.

The two relevant questions are do they meet the uniform policy (the yellow stitching might be an issue) and are they comfortable/practical enough?

PortiasBiscuit · 26/08/2024 07:00

No contrast stitching at our school, all has to be black

Lougle · 26/08/2024 07:06

What do the uniform rules say? At my DDs' old school, the rule was "Black formal shoes (shoes with a low heel no more than 2cm that can be polished NOT suede or canvas). No Sports branded shoes i.e. Adidas, Converse and Nike." They also had to have a defined heel, so no ballet pumps.

Those shoes would have failed for the height of the platform, and the yellow stitching.

mitogoshi · 26/08/2024 07:06

Check the school uniform, most don't allow the yellow contrast stitching.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 26/08/2024 07:08

A bully will find any reason to bully, so I wouldn't say no for that reason, but these would be against the uniform policy at my dcs school.

Littletreefrog · 26/08/2024 07:08

You would have to sharpie over the stitching at our school.

Maomoo · 26/08/2024 07:10

I have the boot version of these and they are like wearing planks! They look good but are definitely not comfortable. I’d go the normal
sole version.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/08/2024 07:26

My dd has platform dm boots and they are not the comfiest for long periods. She hobbles home from concerts!

Berga · 26/08/2024 07:32

Depends on uniform policy, as PP have said, might have to Sharpie over the yellow stitching.
I don't think you should worry about the teasing as it's up to your DS. My DD had similar DMs for school and is still wearing them 3 years later, so they did work out to be a good investment.

Stellllaaa · 26/08/2024 07:53

My niece wears those for school. Nobody teases her as far as I am aware. My dd has the boot version and she finds them heavy for a whole day.

My dd has had DM school shoes before and she did have to sharpie the stitching but she wasn't bothered. They are good quality sturdy shoes,

CoffeeAndSunrise · 26/08/2024 09:16

Our school wouldn't allow those. Check the schools uniform policy.

SaintHonoria · 26/08/2024 09:22

I think a boy wearing those may have the kiss taken out of him.

Although, they do look like they would be suitable for defensive action against anyone who picks on him.

BabaYetu · 26/08/2024 09:24

Contrast stitching would make them unsuitable for the uniform here.

Redburnett · 26/08/2024 09:24

IMO No.

Hopebridge · 26/08/2024 09:27

All black shoes (they can have all black trainers) in my children's school. They aren't allowed contrast stitching or coloured labels. No heels or platforms. Every school is very different. I would check with them directly if you can.

DiscoBeat · 26/08/2024 09:29

Neither of my sons' schools would accept those, they have to be formal shoes.

Maddy70 · 26/08/2024 09:30

No. The flatter ones are

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 26/08/2024 09:34

Yeah same as everyone else, check the uniform policy. I am a very casual dresser myself no interest in fashion non gender conforming lesbian for good measure . I suffered for the whole time I was head of year with the ever exciting problem of what is a suitable school shoe! Honestly the most useful degree for anyone wanting to become senior or even middle leadership in a secondary school is fashion. I stupidly did History.
See if your son would be interested in totally black kickers , for some reason all headteachers even the most insanely strict like these. Maybe your son would like to have the platform DMs for leisure wear and he could try wearing them to school after November when the season of uniform insanity ends. I know this is an expensive option sorry.

longdistanceclaraclara · 26/08/2024 09:34

No.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 26/08/2024 09:37

Definitely no!

I remember with affection my totally impractical black wedges in the late 70s 😂

lcakethereforeIam · 26/08/2024 10:27

I believe since DM moved production to China(?) the quality has nosedived, so he'd basically be paying for the brand name. A company salvaged the old DM factory, Solovair, their product is slightly cheaper, better made and (imo) way cooler.

TheNoodlesIncident · 26/08/2024 12:37

My DS's school has photos of examples of acceptable and unacceptable shoes on the website to help avoid issues like this. Could you check the website for the school he's going to, they might also have some guidance? It's easier than asking staff and can avoid a costly error if they say Nope...

(DS's school was quite strict and did school coats (two styles) and bags (also two types) because a lot of pupils were frankly taking the piss. Deprived area so some kids were badly affected by poverty and some weren't and wore Canada Goose coats to school then took the pee out the poor kids. Bloody awful so I wasn't surprised school took the stance they did)

readysteadynono · 26/08/2024 12:40

I think if he is confident in them then let him have them. People can get bullied for all kinds of ridiculous reasons. No-one deserves it because they wear certain shoes or can avoid it by being unremarkable.
