Working in pub at 13

My ex has not only alienated my kid against me, he's now got them a job in a pub working a couple of shifts collecting glasses. Is this even legal? I told him I wasn't agreeing to this but obviously this give him more fuel to go against.

I'm also tempting to contact the brewery (as a concerned parent) but I'm afraid this will make her rebel more. He has completely brainwashed her and it's just another blow each time.

The people he surrounds himself with isn't good either and it's his local.

I'm concerned.

She can't sell alcohol, but it doesn't sound like she is doing. What are the hours and supervision like? Its quite a good experience for a young teen, to have a proper job, as long as it is short, daytime hours

wildlingtribe · 07/08/2024 08:50

It's 4 hours each time on a weekend but late. Work experience is good, it's also the way it's been arranged without both parents knowledge too.

Concerned about what? 4 hours isn’t a lot. It’s a familiar place. Good worth ethic and all that.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 07/08/2024 08:54

How late is late? From memory I don't think someone her age can work after 7pm??

CherieBabySpliffUp · 07/08/2024 08:58

Have just googled, it's 5 hours max Monday to Saturday and only 2 hours on a Sunday. No working between 7pm and 7am. This applies for school holidays.

Depends on the pub as well, DS worked in the kitchen of a a city centre pub, he was 16 at the time and just in sixth form. He loved it but one day they needed glass collectors out front so he got sent out he got sexually harassed by a group of middle age women. For a young lass to be in a pub collecting glasses late with drunk people especially men, no way would I want that.

sleekcat · 07/08/2024 09:09

Looks like it's not legal in the evenings now, unless she finishes before 7. When I was young glass collectors were about 14 but things are different now. I'd let her do it on a Sunday lunch, for example, though.

Has to be after 7am and before 7pm but double check the law

sleekcat · 07/08/2024 09:11

As PP said, you need to be mindful of the environment as well. It's a long time since I worked in a pub but back then a lot of comments and general chat were not appropriate for a child.

dollopz · 07/08/2024 09:13

Depending on the pub it could be an excellent introduction into work

purpleme12 · 07/08/2024 09:13

Will I wouldn't be comfortable with her working in a pub at that age

User364837 · 07/08/2024 09:15

I’m pretty relaxed by Mumsnet standards but I wouldn’t be happy with this because of the banter likely to be directed to a 13yo girl by tipsy old men

Snacksgalore · 07/08/2024 09:17

She can’t work after 7

sleekcat · 07/08/2024 09:22

Reading again, I don't think I would want her to do it at any time. 'It's his local' implies there is a likely to be a core of regulars who will engage in inappropriate 'banter', or talk about things you don't want her to hear. Plus they are not bothered about following the law if they've already given her a job, so that says a lot about them. Sounds like a sneaky cash in hand thing.

good96 · 07/08/2024 14:20

At that age you can’t work after 7pm - so they’d be breaking the law.

I’m surprised the brewery hasn’t raised this…
unless the Bar Manager is paying them out of the till and keeping it on the hush.

I doubt risk assessments have been carried out too…..

so yes, they shouldn’t be working there at those times and as a concerned parent you are within your rights to report this.

wildlingtribe · 07/08/2024 15:50

I agree about introductions for work. But exactly that, it all depends on the pub, the people in the pub etc. Girls now look older than their age, and I don't want my daughter being at risk.

There are many options to choose from for intro to work. It's also a topic for TWO parents to discuss especially when there is an ongoing situation where he is breaking rules on agreements.

It's after 7pm.
