Weed

DS is 18 in a week. Last year when he was 17 I found weed related stuff in his room. He went on the defensive saying all his mates used it etc. I gave him what t thought was a sensible drugs talk. And warned him I didn’t want it in house.

I thought it was a phase because there has been nothing since. He’s doing well at sixth form and is off to uni in September. He has a part time job and doesn’t need money from us. Apart from a bit of attitude now and then he’s a good kid.

however putting washing away today and found a lighter and some papers. So he still doing it.

DH says to leave it. He doesn’t smoke at home and we both know we will end up in a row with him. DH makes the point he is an adult in a few days, we’ve already had ‘the talk’ so what’s the point?

i don’t know what to do. I’m upset and worried but realise I can’t make him stop.

WWYD?

Exactly this.

But I see already that the Whataboutters have already posted in response banging on about mobile phones and electric cars and it not being as bad as alcohol. Ok then.

I work with trafficked kids taken from grow houses btw.

Loads of women on MN are weed addicts as are their partners. So they have to justify it to themselves.🤷‍♂️

thank you

I think a lot of people believe that child slaves are some sort of theoretical moral argument, rather than real people suffering horrifically and very near by.

People who are quite rightly horrified by the historical fact of the Atlantic slave trade are prepared to fudge on this issue.

What is the difference? Except modern slavery is a - much bigger than historic slavery and b- something that you personally can collude in or take a stand against (and many MNers chose to collude in)

Weed is legal in a lot of places and plenty of people live upstanding and functional lives while also partaking. It's not meth or heroin. What's the worst thing he's going to do after getting high, order a pizza?

I don’t disagree and actually think weed is safer than alcohol for many people. But isn’t there some research that says it’s riskier below the age of about 25- and especially for boys? That it can trigger mental illnesses such as schizophrenia.

I have told my teens that I expect they will be offered weed and may well try it. I’ve also told them that I don’t have any huge moral objection to the drug and that I understand why it is legal in many places, but that while their brains are still developing, it’s much safer not to use it (especially the skunk strains).

Leave him to it. My Dad threw me out of the house for this when I was 18 and into the arms of the then bf who he thought was solely to blame for it. Admittedly bf at the time did smoke it a lot and was an influence but in reality so did my then school friends.

I've never ever forgiven my Dad. He's on his deathbed and I feel nothing for him. I was far too young to be living with my then bfs family and him, he was controlling and wouldn't let me go anywhere or see my friends, was horrendously jealous of my male school friends and due to his love of Stella and weed would go into psychosis states and smash the place up. I only had to climb out of the downstairs WC to get away from his temper.

Long winded way of saying just stay out of it's it's such a right of passage growing up. You just have to make sure he doesn't develop a habit as it does rot your brain, I was never a fan on it! My ex bf was totally mentally gone because of it through.

what about the Dads of all the children stolen into slavery to grow weed? Their feelings don't count, I suppose. Your father was supposed to collude with you in supporting this slave trade?

Weed damages less brain cells than alcohol...yet alcohol is legal... and most people on here will be having a glass of wine or two... or a few beers.( l don't drink.. don't like the taste/ effect)
Weed will be legal here soon for own consumption.
My eldest Grandson age 19 smokes it now and again.
But the problem becomes more of a problem if he is smoking it with tobacco.. the tobacco is more damaging.. if it's grass its usually smoked on its own.. if it's block it is crumbled into the tobacco.
I use Weed for my horrific pain... but l use a dry herb vape ( not like the vapes everyone uses) this is for Weed ( but obviously called a dry herb vape) . I'm 66 and I'm not the only old person that uses it for pain.
I don't get high. It just calms my muscles and stops the spasms.
There is a huge drop with many young people now not drinking .. going out clubbing etc..
They gather in small groups and smoke weed..
If you look at Canada's view on it .. now it's legal there.. it will give you a better perspective.

complete rubbish - https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/01/30/marijuana-adolescent-brain-development/

The study found that cannabis use was associated with thinning of the prefrontal cortex and that this effect was dose-dependent — the greater the cannabis exposure, the greater the cortical thinning.

The researchers reported that accelerated cortical thinning was associated with attentional impulsivity, but there was no link with any other cognitive function. (There have been several other studies of the effect of cannabis on brain structure in teens, which reported similar findings.)

What does this mean? The cerebral cortex is the center of reasoning and critical thinking; it undergoes significant structural change during adolescence and doesn’t fully mature until around age 25.

We know that cannabinoid receptors are widely distributed throughout the brain and play an important role in mammalian brain development, so it is not surprising that cannabis exposure might affect brain development, especially during adolescence when the brain is uniquely sensitive to environmental influence.

Frontiers | Altered Frontal Cortical Volume and Decision Making in Adolescent Cannabis Users

Anticipating future outcomes is central to decision making and a failure to consider long-term consequences may lead to impulsive choices. Adolescence is a v...

@combinationpadlock strange response.

He's an adult, pays his way and all in all sounds a pretty good guy. It obviously doesn't effect his get up & go so I'd leave it personally.
