Anyone's teen completed a lifeguard qualification?

Did they find work easily? I'm encouraging ds to do the qualification but it's quite a big outlay and it lasts for 2 years.

I'm wondering if it's likely to be worth it.

I’m wondering the same thing. Also our local leisure centre is putting the course on while we are on holiday, so DD would have to take the train 50 mins to another leisure centre to do it another week. Not sure if it’s going to translate into work & is actually worth it?

Hi, mine did and has worked consistently since. We funded hers but she now works for a leisure company that routinely puts in courses like the one described above. There’s also a leisure assistant role which is popular with teens.

Mine did. Always had work and it looked really good on his cv after uni.

Yes, one of mine did too. Expensive, and takes a lot of effort- but she has been able to work right through her 6th Form and earn a decent amount of money. It needs topping up regularly, but she knows she will be able to find work when at Uni, and eventually, all over the world, and at a far better rate than other jobs like shops, bars, etc.

Again, very unfair that it is not really accessible to kids whose parents don't have the money and time to support them when doing this.

Yes my friend's daughter did this and has progressed onto swim teaching which is now helping fund her at uni.

Mine did. Expensive course, but walked straight into a job at a local leisure centre, pretty much picks and chooses which shifts to work, and outearns all his peer group in retail and hospitality by quite some margin.

There’s also regular (paid) training, and it’s teaching good life skills and responsibility.

clarrylove · 28/06/2024 08:05

How much are they getting paid? I'm considering this for my youngest but it would need to be financially worth it.

evilkitten · 28/06/2024 09:49

£11.44/hr. This is minimum wage for 21 and over, but much higher than the £6.40 he could be getting paid as a 17 year old.

DS's gf in 6th form did one. Said the job itself was very stressful and you are criminally liable for negligence if someone drowns.
