Help with teenage spots

Hazey19 · 24/06/2024 19:06

My 13 year olds face is covered in spots and we ve tried everything. I feel so bad for them as I suffered at that age and it was horrible. They are really self conscious about it and none of their friends are suffering the spot stage yet so they feel pretty alone. They are very good at keeping themselves clean and shower once sometimes twice a day, also washing face twice a day. Have tried most things but just wondering if anyone has any tips or recommendations of something which will work on teenage spots please?

This is interesting. I didn't know there's an app for teen skincare advice.

Skin whether a teenager in 20's 30's 40's 50's or 60's is not when a problem properly addressed. Antibiotics can work so can Roaccutane also creams like benzl peroxide can work but like many things your body becomes immune there should be NHS clinics run for skin problems ie spots and acne as many people whatever the age as often if not addressed can manifest in mental health causing embarrassment shyness social avoidance. Clinics could address the best solutions and also creams like zindaclyn which has a low steroid and in gel form can be used on the skin areas of problem and makeup can be applied on top. Also clinics could have workshops where people are taught how to cover problem skin and also address how it affects them day to day. Too many GPS because it doesn't make you physically ill don't treat it with the severity it deserves.

I ended up taking our DS to the GP and feel guilty tgat I didn’t do it sooner as he had some scarring.

If you’ve tried lots of things I really woukd recommend seeing the GP Flowers

Boy or girl? DD has tried everything- acnecide, various cerave concoctions, the ordinary, Paula's choice, simple, Duac, epiduo, Lymecycline and Levest, (not sure why on earth the GP prescribed this, as it's not a pill that is recommended for acne). Nothing made a jot of difference and her skin just kept getting worse. Her acne is definitely hormonal, (forehead clear, nose not too bad, chin and jawline awful, big red and cyst like spots all over her lower face). Anyway, at my insistence, the GP has prescribed Dianette, which is a contraceptive pill that has been shown to improve hormonal acne. We're only two weeks in, but I can see a slight improvement 🤞🤞🤞.
Not sure what we will do if it doesn't work out- we're not keen on roaccutane as she already has MH issues.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is if your DC is a girl, hormonal medicine could be an option.

@ChocolatecoveredshitpigJust wondered how your dd got on with Dianette? Dd 14 has been on everything now apart from that and accutane which we really don’t want her to take. Dianette is what cleared my acne up as a teen but I was older, 16-17. The increased risk of blood clots is scary, but GP and 2 dermatologists (one private and one nhs referral) have said that’s now the second to last resort left on the treatment ladder. She just seems so young at only recently 14 to be on risky medication. On the other hand the acne is slowly but surely effecting her confidence and happiness, I’m starting to get concerned about depression and her mental health because of how much it’s effecting her (since she was 11)

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 19/05/2025 15:03

@Ivyy- hello, unfortunately she had to come off the Dianette as she started getting migraines. Frustratingly, her skin had started to really improve! It’s not great at the moment. We still have a few packs of Dianette left and she’s keen to try again now she’s had a break, (I will clear this with the GP first).

This isn't a product or regime or anything, but for my daughter, she download the wellbeing app luna (we are luna on the app store) and it has LOTS of info about skincare and skin types, ingredients, all from dermatologists. And it's designed specifically for teens, so it won't recommend things that are too harsh. It's made a difference, because she now has a good routine in place recommended specifically for her and it's helped her feel more incontrol x

Hi there - I know this is an old thread but I am jumping on to check out some recommendations (and keep it higher up on my watch list!)

DS is 16 and in the last 6 months his skin has really suffered with acne. Unfortunately though he will only use pure Witch Hazel (which i initially recommended - but it has almost run out so I won't buy any more as i think it is stripping his skin layer), eats far too much sugar, not enough water and I'm ashamed to say will only shower every couple of days Hmm

I have just bought him some Boots Salicyclic Acid face wash and gel. So I will see how that works but i am interested in that inaessentials lavender water - he has ADHD so is very rigid in what he wants to do - it's frustrating because he is upset about his acne but won't let me help him. I think the lavender water will be good as it is the same type of application as witch hazel.

Acnecide has really worked here but it does seem quite strong. He uses the face wash twice a day and the spot cream before bed, and it’s worked but not cleared completely. 47 skin is supposed to be really good but it’s expensive, good luck xx

Have you seen the GP, DD was treated with Doxycycline plus epidou. Her friend has me stronger acne and was treated with accoutane which is stronger and needs monitoring and blood tests.

PitchforksAndProof · 06/01/2026 20:47

Acnecide gel has also been effective here. DD had tried various things for her moderate acne without much success. I bought some acnecide gel as a last resort before trying the GP. She's just finished the first tube and it has absolutely made a difference. Her skin looks lots better. She is still getting the odd spot but not the angry clusters of acne she was getting. She experienced some mild flaking skin when she started the gel but just moisturised well to help with this.
