Hi all,

I am a mum struggling with communicating with my teenager who is currently struggling with depression. She has a therapist but I was wondering if anyone also has a teenager with this condition and if they felt they were engaging in therapy and what kind of techniques worked best for their teen? Thank you!

I'm not sure my teen has depression but we haven't worked out what it is yet. But generally every day I count the small wins. Seeing a therapist is a big win. Small wins are asking for something nice (books, clothes), a ticket to something planned in the future, a small joke or answer to small talk, sharing a single sentence about something they read or watched.
How long has it been like this? What age? Is she at school college?

Also, re engaging with therapy, whilst all info shared is, and should be, private, you should be having meet ups with the therapist say twice a year to check in. More often/sooner if this is more recent and you want the know if it's compatible.

Oh also I keep communicating small things, without expecting them to be returned. They often turn out to be heard/useful/openings/a kindness. But never with an expectation of conversation as I would OBVIOUSLY say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

My teen DD has anxiety and depression
antidepressants have made the world of difference
therapy alone did not - she couldn’t think flexibly enough to make use of therapy until the medication lifted her mood enough

As a mother of a teenager, I was struggling, feeling like every day was an uphill battle. The arguments, the silent treatments, the constant worry—it was exhausting. I felt like I was losing my connection with my child, and I didn't know where to turn.
Then, I came across "From Turmoil To Triumph: A Parent's Guide To Teen Emotional Wellness.
From the very first chapter, I felt seen and understood. The author’s personal stories and practical advice were exactly what I needed. She shared ways to build trust with my teenager, how to set boundaries without pushing them away, and most importantly, how to keep the lines of communication open. The book dives deep into real-life issues like mental health, peer pressure, and the overwhelming influence of social media.
One of the things I loved most was the emphasis on creating a safe and loving environment at home. The author’s insights helped me see things from my teen’s perspective, which was a real eye-opener. It wasn’t just about solving problems but about fostering a relationship based on mutual respect and understanding.
With every page, I felt more equipped to handle the challenges of raising a teenager. The stories from other parents and teens included in the book made me realize I wasn’t alone. We all have our struggles, but together, we can navigate these tough years.
If you're feeling lost or overwhelmed, I highly recommend "From Turmoil To Triumph: A Parent's Guide To Teen Emotional wellness" It gave me hope, strength, and the tools to reconnect with my child. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8V46F5L
