My daughter is extremely strong willed. When she was younger I bought all of her clothes- mix of Next, M&S, Mini Boden and a few others. She always looked lovely, put together and cared for.
fast forward to 14 and I cannot get her to wear anything I buy. Shopping trips end in arguments. She likes tracksuit bottoms, baggy leisure wear or crop tops with logos.
i don’t care if i sound like a snob- she looks terrible- like Vicky Pollard. She cakes herself in makeup and black mascara despite being fair of hair and skin.
where can i find age appropriate, nice clothing for her?! Shein etc are so awful!
we have a big family weekend away- and I am at a loss as to what she should wear.

My mum sent me out to buy a dress and shoes for a family wedding when I was 14. I came back with a black dress that had stars and moons on it and a pair of purple doc martens 😂 it was the 90s!

I have a 14 year old step daughter, there is no way on earth she would wear anything from M&S.
she particularly lives in Black Nick Pro leggings, primark crop tops and Nike Air Force.
She will mix it up when out with friends. She likes Zara, Shein, Urban Outfitters and Tkmaxx. Also Vinted.

She is 14 let it go! ’ - I am surprised you have got this far to be honest! tracksuit and crop tops are just fine - for more formal stuff my 17yo goes to zara, h and m sometimes and occasionally lipsy or river island.

Thank you all. I do get it, but I should maybe expand and say that at the weekend we are going to a social function which requires smart casual dress code- women mostly in dresses usually, men usually in variations on a chinos and linen jackets and panama hat themes. It’s this particularly that I’m worried about.

My DD would probably wear a pair of wide legged cargo trousers and a crop top (not super cropped just bellybutton length) to something more formal. I think she'd only wear a dress to a wedding and then it might be a struggle, she'd definitely need to choose it herself. I doubt anyone will care that much about a teenager as long as she doesn't look completely inappropriate

I can't help too much as my 14 year old dresses like a 1950 geography professor and very into charity shop finds and dark academia.

I'd be looking at more quirky shops and putting a twist on the clothes you are happy for her to wear. Disturbia is mainly for goth / alternative styles but actually do some great playsuits and dresses but in quirky different patterns, DDs favourite has mushrooms all over it. So it's worth exploring different shops and finding the diamonds in the rough.

If she wants to wear trackies get her some nice harem trousers in different patterns (Forgotten Tribes approx £22 a pair) and if crop tops are her thing then get her plain black / white ones to wear to make an outfit. There is a middle ground to be found here.

For the more formal event I'd be looking at jumpsuits but getting her involved in finding something. 14 year old DD wore this to my graduation recently. She found it herself, I gave her instructions it was for a semi formal event, shouldn't have any logos or phrases, flowers or geometric patterns were fine etc etc and she decided on that and teamed it with a white shirt and silver tie and wore it with black leather converse.

My niece and all of her friends wear exactly the same. Air force 1 trainers, black leggings, a crop top and if cold some sort of hoodie which is usually an Australian brand which name I have forgotten but it’s written on the back. They are all exactly the same. Make up is heavy. Fake tan is everywhere. It’s just them growing up. Pick your battles OP. This isn’t one. Just let her be. Even on a smart day, don’t dictate what she can and can’t wear. It’s not your issue to worry about.

I’ve remembered. White fox I think.

My daughter is all into this 'house of CB' (she loves the summery cotton/ corset type but she's not getting one!). But if you have the money you could look at those and suggests she choose something. Brandy Melville also trendy for dresses as PP mentioned. I would just say she needs to choose one thing more dressy for that occasion and see what she comes up with.

@themurkyera

My 12yo dresses like that - air force or fake uggs, leggings, crop top and white fox hoodie.

As did 50% of the young teens at Westfield Sheperd's bush when I took her.
