Bag for an 18th

Am thinking about getting a good bag for my DD for her 18th and happy to spend a reasonable amount of money. Was looking at a Coach tote bag. They’re about £380. Obviously not moving into the serious designer bag league, but still a fairly hefty investment. As her 18th want it to be something that will stand the test of time and this looks quite classic, but at the same time want it to be something she will want to use now. So question is to those who have teenage daughters, is Coach an acceptable brand? And tote bags equally ok?? Happy for recommendations of other brands / styles that would get the seal of approval from an 18 year old girl!

My goddaughter is 18 in January, I would never buy her a designer bag as she would drop it in a puddle, leave it on a train, etc. Is your daughter someone who would really enjoy and value a bag? Just thinking that maybe a piece of jewellery with some sentiment attached might mean a bit more and stand the test of time?

Yes, she is quite careful with things and has a bag on her wish list as something that she would like (in terms of a ‘forever’ type of bag). I have also got her a piece of jewellery already.

Do you have a picture of which one you have your eye on?

Personally I would do a day
out shopping and let her pick her “dream” then do a nice lunch somewhere and maybe a few cocktails after

Maybe consider a Michael Kors tote, my DD (20) adores hers, as do her friends.
If you could get to Bicester Village (or maybe a similar outlet?), they had some amazing totes on offer on my last visit including Versace and Burberry.

Ah fair enough, I do love the jewellery idea as it will just last and last. I like @TemuSpecialBuy ‘s idea.

DD is 19 - honestly I’d never choose a bag for her, especially designer. I agree with PP suggestions of making a nice shopping day out of it so that she can have a look around the shops and pick the one that she loves.

Most girls around that age really only use Longchamp bags or totes, big designer ones really aren’t very popular with them

Whiskeywithwater · 25/05/2024 18:27

Oh, that’s nice actually (the Coach one). She has a couple of cheapy ones in that style from Urban Outfitters so she might like one like that - thank you. She has one of the longchamp ones already that she uses loads - she loves it.

That’s the tote I was looking at, but I think actually she might prefer the baguette style

Thanks everyone - idea of letting her choose and making a day of it great! (Within a budget of course!!)

Enjoy! Although definitely buy the bag before the cocktails otherwise you may find your budget has suspiciously grown! Have fun!

I would definitely do this. It would be so disappointing to spend so much money on something she didn't love.

I'd love that day out!

I agree with letting her choose and making a day of it; lovely idea!

Don't know how much this helps or indeed what Coach are like these days, but I bought a Coach bag about 20 years ago and its still in really good condition and timeless. The worst that has happened to it was a little of the stitching came undone one time - I took it into Coach who had it repaired free of charge and it was delivered back to me all polished up in a nice box - was like new!

I also have a Michael Kors bag... and I like it and use it a lot, but if I was offered the choice of a free bag from either, I'd go with Coach, just because of how much my bag has stood the test of time and the customer service too.
