Irregular periods in 14 year old

DD (just 14), had her first period at 12.5. It was very heavy and lasted 7 days. She then didn't have a period for 3 months and the next one was much more normal. Since then, her periods have stayed irregular - often 4 months apart. She is otherwise healthy, BMI of 20, no signs of hirsutism, some acne but nothing OTT. Dr says to wait. Has anyone else experienced this and ended up with a regular cycle? I was underweight at that age and my periods started later so I can't compare.

I think it’s quite normal for periods to be irregular for the first 3 years- i wouldn’t worry just yet. If they’ve not settled by the time she’s 15 or so I’d head back though, just to check there’s nothing else going on x

My DD is also just 14 and came to me yesterday saying 'I haven't had a period for ages'.

When I checked it was 38 days since her last one, 35 days between that one and the previous month. I tend to keep a note on my calendar but don't always remember. She still hasn't come on (now day 39).

She too started when she was about 12 and a bit, and has been pretty regular until now.

She has been unwell this past week with a heavy cold and prior to that had a viral rash for a few weeks (pityriasis rosea), so I'm thinking this could be relevant.

I'm not too concerned but will keep an eye on things.

Thanks Nellie. I would be happier if my DD’s was only 40 days apart, I really hope that it is still in the normal range. Her skin is breaking out quite badly this week as well so her hormones are all over the place

Poor thing. Yes, absolutely sounds like some haywire hormones there.

My DD actually got hers today so it'll be interesting to see if this longer cycle is repeated next month or if it goes back to 'normal'.

From everything that I've read, what you describe can be perfectly normal and it sounds as though your DD hasn't got into any regular pattern at all so far (mine had and that was what I found weird about the sudden irregularity!).

I think as the PP said, it's probably something to keep an eye on at the moment. I wonder if there are any supplements or similar that she could try to maybe regulate things? EPO maybe? My older DD used that at one point when she was around your DDs age (she actually used it to help with hormonal low mood) but if I remember rightly, it make her periods shorter. Could be something to look into...

That’s a good idea, will look at EPO and other supplements - thanks again x

dd 14 also has irregular periods since getting hers. I had too at that age so I didn't sweat it as it eventually normalised, helps us too rn to have dd track her periods on weaareluna. I wouldn't worry esp since GP says to wait and our dd's are still young and tends to be irregular. x

Yes my periods were all over the place until I got pregnant aged 25. They’d regularly go missing for a couple months, particularly if I was stressed, ill or doing more sport than usual.
