Daughter is invited to 13th birthday’s party for her school friend, they are not too close, just school friends, knowing only each other for about a year and so since secondary started.
What is current rate to give as gift?
I was thinking to pop £10 into the card but a few colleagues said it’s usually £5 .
Advice please.x

I have a kid in year 1. It tends to be up to £10 for a child who’s just a classmate but £15 for a friend.

FunnysInLaJardin · 23/03/2024 13:31

DS2 is 14 and goes to parties very rarely as they are not really a thing anymore. He did go to one last week though and I put £20 in with the card

BoohooWoohoo · 23/03/2024 13:32

I would give a tenner and my kids have recently left secondary.

EmilyPlay · 23/03/2024 13:33

A tenner is fine. Even a fiver would be fine really.

Pootle40 · 23/03/2024 13:35

£10-£15 depending on age and how close

Americandreamz · 23/03/2024 13:41

Thanks, I’m actually surprised she was invited as not closed friends, not even a classmates, apparently they just talk on the playground sometimes.
I think I will put the £10.

No lower than £10, as you might as well not bother otherwise.

Passthecake30 · 24/03/2024 22:31

£15 for my 14yr old dd, or £10 and a bag of sweets.

sunshineandshowers40 · 24/03/2024 22:33

I usually give £10 but I have recently increased to £20 but have teens.

sunshineandshowers40 · 24/03/2024 22:34

A bag of sweets too if I'm organised!

tryingsomethingnew · 27/03/2024 17:49

I would say £20. They're teens. It's a generous gift, and reasonable. If it's parties every month I could understand but as it's not every party I think £20. Very close friends I'd give £30

tryingsomethingnew · 27/03/2024 17:49

Sorry...meant to add that if it's a girl- a
Lipgloss in boots is about £12 so I would give more than a tenner for sure.

£20 minimum for us. To be honest if I’d gone to the effort of hosting (and paying for) a party for DD and someone gave her £5 in a card it would be an insult, especially when we always reciprocate with lovely gifts on each of DD’s friends birthdays.

UnbeatenMum · 29/03/2024 13:35

My 13yo got £15 from 1 friend and a £10 voucher plus chocolates from another. We also did £10 plus chocolates for one of her friends.

UnbeatenMum · 29/03/2024 13:35

£5 is fine for primary school though

ditalini · 29/03/2024 14:09

£50 here (not really but it was fascinating to watch the amount rising).

Tenner is fine.

Ap42 · 18/08/2024 21:10

I did £5 for Birthday party's when my children were in the infants, as their normally invited to loads of party's at that age. Now their in the juniors and secondary, less party's now so between £10-20 depending on how close they are to the other child.

caringcarer · 18/08/2024 21:17

I gift £10 to a classmate and £20 to his closer friends.

Completely depends on your income. I could only afford £5 because if I put in higher it would mean we couldn't eat for a couple of days. Do you think it's an insult now?

Blankscreen · 19/08/2024 07:26

£20 seems to be the going rate amongst ds' friends. (14).
Dd (10) I still buy presents and do £15 - £20

Or just be pleased that someone your dc likes bothered to come to their party. Not everyone has £20

OneToThree · 19/08/2024 17:57

I give the amount of their age.
