My son dropped out of school last January and is nearly 19. He has no interest in studying, working or anything. He works out and eats as wants to bulk. Has friends and shows some interest in going out when he can afford to. He has uni offers as is enrolled on an online Access course in Sports Science. He struggles to motivate himself to study and has four months to finish the course if hopes to get to uni next autumn. He's just been chatting to me about how there's no point in anything. And maybe death is better. Says he doesn't see the point in anything. I am at wits end. Last year we hassled him to try and motivate him to study. This year we've just let him be. No improvement. Could he be depressed, despite interest in gym and seeing friends? Could it be something hormonal? Or is it just teenage angst? And we need to just watch and see? So lost. Have never pressured him or anything. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar? Should we try and get a blood test?

Can you drop everything to have sometime away, a quick holiday in the sun, to get him out of his bubble, to see there is a whole world out there.

Hey there,
To a certain extent existential angst is part of being a teenager/young person. But he does sound depressed, whether that is clinical or not is for him and his doctors to decide.
Taking positive action is a good intervention, and diet is one way to do that.
I suggest that you watch Georgia Ede on youtube, she is an american psychiatrist studying the link between diet and mental health.
The link below is one you might want to share with your son, as the interviewer Ken Berry, also a doctor, is also a good example fo how diet impacts physical well being.

I wish you the best of luck, and also want to say that you sound like a good parent.

Our GP also told DS to contact an organisation called Inspire who support with MH. Despite our nagging he hasn’t done this yet. He is relying on the anti-depressants which worries me. He still isn’t sharing how he’s feeling with us and I suspect that why he won’t contact them.
