Summer job after GCSE

Hi
are kids in year 11 meant to look for a summer job after their GCSEs?
I have mentioned it to my DS and he was shocked I could think he would need to find a summer job!
what is normal these days?

They don't have to obviously but if they want money they have to earn it somehow. Even if its just a weekend job

Paid job or voluntary work, either really - as long as you end the summer with something on your CV

They suddenly have a lot of free time once their exams are over and unless the bank of Mum and Dad is happy to finance everything, they will definitely want some money to enjoy the summer with their friends.

It can be tough to find a job, especially for the younger ones in the year but it can be done.

Is he going to Sixth Form or college ?

Summer only work doesn’t exist everywhere unless you live in a touristy place.

A part time job that he continues at Sixth Form is common but again, depends where you are. If you are rural with no public transport then it would depend on you driving him there and picking him up.

What kind of jobs? Supermarkets? DS become 16 in June so quite tricky

Quite normal where we are for kids to get a weekend job as soon as they turn 16.

My DS did the lifeguard training course as soon as he was 16 and had had a job ever since. After his GCSEs he did a two week internship at an accountancy firm and then worked at the swimming pool for the rest of the time apart from a week off for our family holiday.

I was hoping that care homes wanted better qualified individuals to look after our elderly loved ones.

Very common to go to the shops and cafes/restaurants at the weekend and see people from local sixth forms. At 16 dc1 and dc3 worked retail and dc2 worked as a barista. We live near a shopping centre and various retail parks which were good places to find work.

Where I live almost all teens have holiday jobs from 14, or younger. Tourism hotspot so lots of work going (cafes, shops, etc). Probably beneficial to future uni and job applications to have some experience.

My 14 year old and 16 year old already have part time jobs they manage around school / college and do more hours in the holidays if available. Not sure what is the norm but if they want money over and above what I can afford to give them then they have to.

Seasonal work - cafes, farm shops, lifeguarding, summer camps all popular. Does the NCS still run?

Not really - they often have someone qualified, such as a nurse as a shift leader, but no qualifications are required to wash up, change beds, deliver breakfast on a tray, clean toilets, wipe bums, etc

Care homes don't employ under 18s for personal care.

Zero hour contracts catering at events, theme park staff, retail all employ 16 year olds. NCS is a good call.

Hospitality here, still able to work there during uni holidays

It was my son’s mission to get a job as soon as he could as he was eager to start earning money. He now works at least one evening a week alongside some weekends. He has just been offered a position which is mainly seasonal but does have some weekends all year round. It’s a bit of a niche thing which he is very qualified in so they snapped him up.

non of the things I have listed are classed as personal care, except maybe wiping bums, but care home employ a lot of young people, and there is plenty to do - mine did hours of ironing! and serving lunches.

it is just one suggestions, there are many other places to work, nurseries as well, have a lot of similar roles, washing up, serving lunch, cleaning toilets, etc.

No care home would employ a 16 year old. Truly. Unless in the kitchen. But most have permanent staff.

Summer jobs don't exist like they used to.

@GreenRaven you clearly have no respect for care home staff and what they do.

All of my kids have had part time jobs since they were 16. McDonald's have been really good employers as they have 0 hours contracts, but pick up extra in the holidays

Good for CV and uni. application and pocket money but make sure they have some rest and hols over the summer. Years 12 and 13 are really hard work these days

Ds started pot washing at 14, then did that alongside being a waiter at 15 and will be a life guard now at 17. Last summer he saved for his car, this summer and next it will be for uni. I am very proud that he works and he pays for all his extras. Most of his friends work.

Do supermarkets like Tesco, Waitrose, sainsburys accept 16? What about Pret and Costa?
