"Mummy....."?

My 15 year old goddaughter starts every sentence addressed to her mother with "Mummy?" and waits for her mother to say "Yes" before saying whatever it was she wanted to say, even when there are only 3 of us in the room. She does it when the rest of the family is present and even when thre are other people in the room. I don't know if she does it in front of her friends.
I clearly remember my own mother telling me to stop doing that, although I can't remember how old I was when she did that.
As a godmother, I understand it's not my pace to say anything at all, but I'd just like to know if this normal at her age?
Any insignt appreciated.

I have three between 20 and 15
i get mum, mummy, mother, mumma, mama, mama wooh wooh, and (dear god) mumsie at various times

i also get their names mixed up and have always called them ridiculous versions of their own names

no one complains

until they do, not others, we will probably continue

It's normal and I love hearing my teen DC say mummy.

As above its regional as not ’ normal ‘ where I am at all !

A polite teenager thread is a refreshing change!

I cringe at the use of mummy and daddy for anyone over the age of 10. But that’s just my northern upbringing I’m guessing . Presumably in parts of the uk this is normal .

I don't think it's regional. I'm a northerner too.

My DD dues this by text. I get a text just saying "Mum" and then when I've replied she asks me a question. I find it bizarre and slightly irritating, but don't see the need to address it.

Stopwiththedamnrain · 25/02/2024 08:26

Are you annoyed by her trying to butt in your conversation or the use of the word "mummy" by a 15yo?
Maybe she's been constantly told off for butting in when her mum was talking so tries to get her attention first (DD looking at you!)

Calling you mummy (unless ironically with a teenage eye roll) gives me the ick a bit as makes me think of an infantalised Prince Charles and the late Queen!

Grin me too, or vairy posh families. No self respecting teenager where I live would say mummy. They would absolutely have the piss ripped out of them.

Needmorelego · 25/02/2024 10:28

@LynetteScavo ha ha - mine does this by text too.
Although I can usually know what type of message will follow depending on whether it's mum or mama.
Mama is when she wants something that involves spending money 😂

DurhamDurham · 25/02/2024 10:37

Maybe the mum isn't great at listening to her daughter so the daughter likes to make sure she has her attention before proceeding?

JamSandle · 25/02/2024 10:43

Sounds like good manners to me.

Needmorelego · 25/02/2024 12:32

I think I've been upgraded.
Today's text message began with "Mamam".
Am I French now 😂
