Any shampoo/treatment recommendations for a teen boy.

Bullies are currently picking on his hair style and slight dandruff.....

What about the coal tar shampoos? They are very effective but do smell quite strong.

What have you tried so far, there are so many choices.

T-gel is worth a go and not too expensive or Head and Shoulders ( there's a fancy one that's quite good but I can't remember the name).

Currently I'm on the Body Shop ginger shampoo that someone here recommended. I've got an itchy scalp and it's amazing for that.

My husband who had extreme dandruff doesn't have dandruff since he started using T-gel (oily scalp version).

What has worked for DS (15) after trying a few shampoos is using Nizoral till it clears up, then maintaining with a Charles Worthington scalp caring shampoo. It was really bad, especially showing on his blazer, but it is under control now.

Second Nizoral

BarelyLiterate · 01/02/2024 21:20

I have been using Tesco own brand anti-dandruff shampoo for donkeys years. It works very well & costs pennies.

thebigwave · 01/02/2024 21:28

DS(16) had the same problem. He started using the Nizoral treatment shampoo to get on top of it. He now uses the treatment shampoo once a week and the daily Nizoral shampoo the rest of the time. It's worked wonders and he's got no dandruff at all anymore.

Head and shoulders isn't actually for dandruff. It is for a flaky scalp but they have marketed it as dandruff because that's what people were using it for. Dandruff is actually more like cradle cap and flaky scalp is what people usually think is dandruff. It is also very common in winter, I always get a bit at the front of my head.

My teen son has a flaky scalp and we are using matrix scalp therapy shampoo. It is starting to help but I do wash his hair for him. I just get him leaning over the bath and give it a good scrub.

If your son has a dry scalp, he needs to be scrubbing well to activate the sebaceous gland, which will increase the oilyness and soothe the dryness.

Nizoral is the only one that really works for me and I only need to use it a couple of times a year

Muckspout · 01/02/2024 21:32

Nizoral was the only thing that worked for my teenage DD.

Violet80 · 02/02/2024 10:55

100% Nizoral, only thing that clears dd's scalp when she has a flare up. Gp prescribed it but then stopped as you can buy a bottle for £7. Make sure you part the hair in each place so you can get it right onto the scalp and let it sit for 5 mins before rinsing. When we saw a dermatologist about dd's acne she also found scalp folliculitis as well as some dandruff, and recommended Nizoral for both. During a flare she told us to treat every other day for a week, then every 3 days and usually after 2 weeks it's much better. Then it's important to still use Nizoral once a week for maintenance to stop it coming back.

Try T Gel but the Sensitive Scalp version. Still clears up dandruff and calms the scalp but without the strong smell.
