DD came home from school today and said that several friends have got their prom dresses already. Prom is in July!! DD will want the heels/nails/hair glam look - do people get hairdressers round like preparing for a wedding?!

looking on Vinted even second hand dresses seem to be £££ so what are the tips, tricks and hits of the trade here? Pass on your hard won wisdom!

what is your budget?

regenerate · 22/01/2024 20:21

for the dress?

WarningOfGails · 22/01/2024 20:26

Don’t know really! Probably would struggle to stomach spending more than £100 but happy to go second hand…

definitely go second hand.

And just keep a close eye on vinted and ebay. make sure you get a clear guide as to what she wants. although likely to change the week before!

Parapapampam · 22/01/2024 20:55

A lot of people buy early if buying new as specialist shops often have a policy of only selling one of each style to pupils from the same school. Not an issue if buying second hand, but then you'll need longer to hunt something down in the right size. Probably worth trying a few on to see which styles and size fit well first, then looking for similar second hand.

We've just bought this for my daughter. I refused to pay £400+ for the ones I've seen in the specialist prom shops

You will find they want the dress. The hair. The fake tan. The limo. Etc, etc. The list is never-ending.
Tell her the budget and tell her that it is up to her how it is spent. There is a max spend but how it is divided up is not your problem.
When it's her money she is spending (instead of your bottomless purse) she will suddenly get much more sensible.

WarningOfGails · 22/01/2024 22:06

Good idea to give her the budget & let her spend it how she wants.
she’s fairly low-key (no limo, not really into make up) but will definitely want some primping!

Have commented on the earlier Prom thread about my DD year 11 prom .. but now have just been told about the year 13 prom! Which is apparently a lot lower key .. however my reason for responding is have been told DD will be looking at dresses from House of CB. Lots of the maxi dresses on the website are quite similar to those the girls wore at the year 11 prom (costing £100’s from prom shops), but House of CB seems to be priced around £150-£180 level. Still a lot of money, but not quite so eye-watering ..

DD wore a 50s style dress from Pocket Watch and Petticoats which was under £100. It's due to be worn at a wedding this summer too.
