Suggestions please for the best teen spot products

DD1 has multiple issues and disabilities and, as a consequence, her self-care and personal hygiene is well below par. I buy her skin-care products and they get used once. Among her many complexities, she is naturally incredibly lazy. Her skin is absolutely awful, not helped by the fact that she picks and picks her spots endlessly. I know that I will get responses about bodily autonomy etc but, as a family we have significant interpersonal difficulties to fry, so I’m not going to go there. I just want to help my teen who has multiple issues and clearly hates herself have one less difficulty to deal with. Please, in short, recommend me good spot products (and not those dots because they end up trodden into my carpet and preferably not anything that will bleach towels or bedding - unless absolutely necessary.)

It's expensive but 47Skin has completely cleared my daughter's skin up.
It's a serum that you put on twice a day.

Paula’s Choice 2% BHA toner (salicylic acid) has genuinely been a miracle worker for DD’s skin. It’s the clearest it’s been in years. It’s a bit pricey but it’s one of those products where less is definitely more, you only need to use a tiny bit 2/3 times a week so a bottle easily lasts months. A basic, non harsh/stripping cleanser & moisturiser are the only other things that you need.

I ‘think’ I may have seen this product in my local TK Maxx. Out of interest, which cleanser and moisturiser does your DD use (and does the moisturiser not cause more spots)?

Moisturiser is an absolute essential for all skin, spots or not. Not using it actually encourages more oil production and therefore more spots. You need something non-comedogenic (non-pore blocking) for teen skin.

DD mostly uses these 2 products from the Ren Evercalm range. She has quite dry and at times sensitive skin so they suit her really well.

@MaloneMeadow thanks so much for replying and thanks for your explanation. I must admit, I’m a bit old school when it comes to skin care. I’m sure we’ve got some of that REN moisturiser as I treated us to the M&S advent calendar this year. I’m off for a rummage!

Should also say you can buy this sample size version of the Paula’s Choice - it would be a good idea to buy a small one like this first to see if it agrees with your DD before investing in a bigger one

The Aveeno facial skincare range has transformed DS’s skin.

He tried loads of other products first but everything was too harsh, stripping all of the natural oils from his face causing his skin to be terribly dry and sore, but still spotty.

You need to calm the skin right down and get some moisture into it.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 21/01/2024 13:57

Nip and Fab Teen Fix has the same 2% salicylic as Paula's Choice.
2% salicylic is what's in most spot treatment lotions, and has been ever since good old Clinique's clarifying 3 step thingy.

Effaclar Duo by La Roche Posay is also excellent and salicylic based.

I'd recommend a very gentle moisturizer along with the SA product as her skin will dry out. Toleriane (also LRP) is great.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 21/01/2024 13:58

(that's a good point about moisture, otherwise skin gets into a vicious circle with more oil being produced to combat dryness)

@CharmedCult which Aveeno products, please?

We’re about to start CeraVe with my 13 year old. Really hoping it helps. She has spots down her neck and back too.

@IcedupTulip DD1 tried the Cerave but it doesn’t seem to work for her - massively helped by the fact that she is a massive soap dodger (to disgusting lengths) and she also has sensory issues (autism and ADHD as well as disabilities) which mean that she hates the sensation and ‘taste’ of products if they accuse get on her lips. I hope your ‘spot’ journey is more straight forward than ours!

Everything from this range.

The cleanser daily, and the exfoliating cleanser twice a week.

Oat moisturiser (in the glass jar) and the serum daily.

Thanks! I will check these out. DD1 had terrible eczema as a toddler and the only products that suited her skin were the Aveeno bath oil and skin cream. We used to be able to get them on prescription - those were the days!

Ah yes you will! My M&S advent calendar this year came with the exact cleanser that DD uses, very handy 😆

The CeraVe wash with SA may help, but cleanser doesn't stay on skin long enough to do anything other than clean. A specific SA product with 2% will dig down into the pores.

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 21/01/2024 15:57

Also: after the SA treatment a niacinamide.
(DD has reminded me. At 11-12 she was starting to get really miserable with her skin. After trial and error, her skin was transformed with CeraVe wash (not the SA one, the one in the green) Effaclar gel and Nip and Fab Teen Fix moisturizer in the day, and Toleriane and Niacinamide at night.)

IcedupTulip · 21/01/2024 16:26

Thank you. We do have the wash but will look into the other stuff too
