Self harming

Hi my child is 17 doing A levels and I discovered by chance that she’s self harming I noticed 4 horizontal scratches on her arm , she went into denial and doesn’t want to discuss it .
Im worried sick as to what I should do to help her & find out why , I know that she’s finding her exams very stressful but she said it’s not that
If it went on the Drs notes could it be held against her for any future unis or jobs !
I just don’t know what to do for the best but I’ve got to do something , I’m worried that she’ll keep doing it on different parts of her body

This is something that you most likely may need to get professional advice about. Please reassure her that getting help with her mental health will not and should not be held against her.
Best of luck to you and your daughter.

Sorry to hear OP!
If your daughter will consent, please take her to the GP.
Or if she will speak to well being at school, make sure you facilitate that.
It is worrying when they do this, but the advice is, they self harm to cope and removing it means you are taking away the coping mechanism.
If she will talk to you about this, let her know that she will not be judged and you know that things are stressful
Would she try snapping a rubber band when she feels like she needs to harm. Alternately ice cubes on the arm, chewing ice or a cold shower are also supposed to help release the stress.
Hope you find something that helps her
It is heartbreaking I know :-(

Xx
