What's after diary of wimpy kid?

Hi, just looking for book recommendations for my DS12.

He used to be an avid reader but very much one genre, that being funny/comic books such as diary of a wimpy kid, Tom Gates, 13 story treehouse but hasn't been able to progress beyond these and now rarely reads.

His little sister had the latest diary of a wimpy kid for Christmas and he has chosen to read it, so I think if I can find him the right books I could get him to read again. I'm keen to do this as he has slipped in to the habit of using his phone before bed and doesn't sleep great.

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for books to move on to. Did you have fans of these books and what did they read next?

Another vote for Artemis Fowl...

Bbq1 · 04/01/2024 21:27

And Percy Jackson

DD is 13 and loved wimpy kid and the treehouse books although she loves most fiction. What she’s really into now though is the Guiness Book of Records and the Weird but True type books. Would he like those?

My 12yo did a ‘personal book shopping’ experience for his birthday and these were the recommendations: hope this gives you some ideas 📚

Sorry, no idea how random carol book ended in there, and can’t delete it!!

Kettlebellend · 04/01/2024 21:39

Second the poster who mentioned comics, doesn’t matter what hes reading as long as he’s enjoying it and actually reading, I used to read the back of the shampoo bottles as a kid 😁

Try searching for graphic novels, my own DS likes reading but used to never pick up a book that looked like it was ‘too big’ or had ‘too many words’ he’s a bit older now but he didn’t lose his love for reading and now reads larger novels.

Theodore Boone! That's the John Grisham series. DS got really into that.

Kettlebellend · 04/01/2024 21:44

my DS like the ‘Little Badman’ series
He also loved the What if books as they are easy to flick through and read at random

UniversalTruth · 04/01/2024 21:47

Sorry OP but @SleepPrettyDarling where did you do a personal kids book shopping experience? Sounds amazing.

Google is just coming up with personalised stories based on the letters of the child's name.

@Ginflinger I stole (from my DD8) and read Impossible Creatures over Christmas and it's one of my books of the year! Highly recommend - need to now go back and read lots more Rundell.

My DD is obsessed with all things Rick Riordan and the new Percy Jackson Disney TV show is shaping up to be pretty good and a good gateway in (rather than the pretty poor films, although DD loves those too!).

Stressedoutmammy · 04/01/2024 21:50

Thanks for all the suggestions, really appreciate it! I may drag him to the library on the weekend and see if any of them are there, at least that way I haven't lost anything if they end up unread on his floor. 🙈

I am also keen to know about the personal book shopping experience! Wouldn't mind that myself.

Tom gates series

VisiblyNot25 · 04/01/2024 21:53

My DS loves Diary of a Winpy Kid.

He‘s also really liked -

Aldrin Aldridge and the Cheese Nightmares
Loki: a bad gods guide to being good
Who let the Gods out

What’s his reading level like? Wimpy kid is quite easy - my 8 year old has read them. Some of the books suggested are really good, but much harder than Wimpy kid and if your ds finds them hard it might just turn him off reading again. Has he read Captain Underpants? These might be too easy, but they might get him reading again.

I’m in Ireland; it’s a small chain that does personal shopping one hour sessions for adults OR kids. It’s a lovely experience.

Would Adrian Mole work?

Forgetaboutme · 04/01/2024 22:05

Theres a book series called Big Nate that my son loved and read after Diary of a wimpy kid and Tom Gates books.

My son basically enjoys reading anything thats been turned into a movie. Not sure if that would work? If he really enjoys the movie get him to read the book after.

Legoroses · 04/01/2024 22:08

There's a graphic novel version of some of the Alex Ryder books - very enjoyable and often in cheap deals in places that do book collections. Quite like Mega Robo Bros books - they are wryly funny in places. And for graphic novel/comic that is a bit menacing - No Country.

Goldwakeme · 04/01/2024 22:18

Willard Price, the Hal and Roger adventure books.

IThinkIMadeItWorse · 04/01/2024 22:20

Timmy Failure series - first one is Mistakes were made

Graphic novels like the Amulet series

Roddy Doyle Rover books

Also comic strip books, classics like Peanuts, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes

I was going to suggest Adrian Mole too. Short entries help motivate. It's a bit of a step up but you can still enjoy it even if you miss half the jokes.

If he has good reading level try My Family and Other Animals (Gerald Durrell) or Helen Cresswell's bagthorpe books. Oldies but goodies and more relatable to real life than some of the fantasy based suggestions.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/01/2024 22:38

My DD 10 loved DOAWK and the spin offs. She loves Tom gates too. She seems to be struggling with what next. She read all Harry Potter and is now investigating lord of the rings and the classics

Yes, he read most of the world's worst series as they came out and a few of the novels but not a huge fan, I think it's the relatable aspect and format of diary of a wimpy kid books he likes, the David Walliams books being a bit too far fetched if that makes sense?

My grandson is 12...he loves jiggy mccue books. We read from first book to end and around again 😊. Cheeky enough for a 12 yr old and chuckle worthy for adults
