Knife crime - how do we feel safe about our teenagers going out at night?

Just read about Primrose Hill stabbing at NYE fireworks which was 22nd teenage stabbing in 2023. How on earth can we let our teenagers go out at night when any random alceration can be so fatal? My teen is mostly at home staring at a screen which I'm not so happy about but perhaps I should take comfort in the fact that he's safer than wandering about?

It is really scary. I try to get mine to come home earlier at weekends when people are out drinking. I get that they are going to want to stay out late and drink now and then and I’m okay about it if they’re at friends houses late and get a lift/ taxi home.

Very scary, just seems so random as well.

Just reading about this, I had missed it

How awful

My ds doesn’t like going out and I am relieved tbh.
Have paid for him to have driving lessons to reduce the possibility of him having to encounter any problems.
The thing is that many of these incidents happen during the day
It is terrifying

I never worried about this. There was one stabbing in the town 2 along 2 years ago that we all heard about. But it never stopped me allowing ds1 to go out. Ds2 is now starting to go out more. I'm fine about it. Yes we all need to be aware, but not angst ridden. It depends where you live aswell.

Yes it is very tricky. Obviously stopping your child from going out has negative effects also.

I guess my only suggestion would be steer them away from town centres and maybe get them into hobbies that would become their social circle.

I get the impression though that young people aren't going out as much as they used to (for example based on reports from Uber drivers I speak to who complain business is down), partly due to things like this.

Obviously young people probably know more about what is going on than we do.
