Moisturiser for spotty teen, recommendations?

Ds has what I would call moderate case of acne. He uses Cerave foaming face wash, prescription cream called Aklief(a retinoid), and is on lymecycline antibiotics.

The prescription cream can make his face quite dry and uncomfortable. He needs a moisturiser that won’t make the spots worse. He does a lot of sport and sweats a lot (which I think is a big trigger for the acne).

Any recommendations please?

cerave moisturiser- they do an am (with sunscreen) and pm version, though i do suspect that the am may break him out if he has sensitive skin!

Ah yes Cerave would probably make sense. It’s really just an evening one we need I think.

My DD used a serum which is lighter

It was this one from Superdrug which is always recommended

Ah ok i never quite understand serums as opposed to moisturisers, but actually that might be worth a go.

La Roche Posay Effeclar range is good

DDs skin cleared up really well after 2/3 months after using Lymecycline

Your DS skin will be drier if he's shaving 🪒

My DS had to stop using any face wash after he started to shave because it stung and dried his his skin out

DD current face wash is Dermatologica clear start

She wears make up so has to remove that first with micellar water or a different cleanser

MissyB1 · 01/12/2023 21:54

Yeah he’s only been on lymecycline for one month so far, I’m hoping it will help. He’s not shaving yet. I think we need to reduce the cream use to every other night.

Even every 3 nights

Retinol is drying

Hydroboost from Neutrogena is a super light hydrating cream.
I think going too aggressive might make things worse. So using an abrasive scrubs with a strong cream might inflame the skin. Alternate maybe the scrub - if he is using one - with a gentle cleanser.

Just thinking about the Cerave moisturiser above, Is there nothing in the medication leaflet for the retinoid about having to use a sunscreen? It’s usually recommended with retinol products.

Actually that’s a good point 🤔 the dermatologist didn’t say anything. I will check the leaflet.

I would recommend the Green people stuff, I think they do a range for teen skin.

MissyB1 · 02/12/2023 08:32

@itsmyp4rty yes a friend of his is using their stuff. I’ve just been browsing it, their moisturiser sounds great in fact all their stuff does, they have a specific teen range and no nasties or harsh chemicals in any of it. Think I’m going to go for that.

Also another tip is to wash the face as soon as they’ve finished sports, even if it’s a quick few splashes of water in the toilet sink,
