DS17 wants a razor

User562377 · 24/11/2023 13:51

He's had a fluffy wee moustache for a while but it's definitely growing in darker and thicker now. Nothing really on his cheeks or chin.
I asked him if he'd like to have a razor for when he feels ready to shave and he said yes.
I asked I'd he had any idea what sort of thing but he said no. I suggested he could ask his friends what they use but he wasn't keen. I asked if he just wanted me to sort it out for him and he said yes.

So help me out. What should I buy him? Any suggestions welcome.

I'd just start with disposable gilette ones. My 17yo seems to get along fine with them, has been shaving for years.

jlpth · 24/11/2023 14:00

But I wouldn't get the cheapest ones as they are kinda like the old bic flesh cutters

jlpth · 24/11/2023 14:01

disposable blades

Withnailandsigh · 24/11/2023 14:02

Dh and step sons all had sensitive skin and soft hair ( Nordic gened) they preferred the small electric ones. They’re pretty idiot proof and don’t cut you. They just have to charge them.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 24/11/2023 14:02

I’d go with a cordless electric for starters. Yes maybe a few triple blade dispoasable ones and cream/foam.

CurlewKate · 24/11/2023 14:02

Do you have someone who can show him how to shave? It's not easy at first...

AWholeNewTeenWorld · 24/11/2023 22:01

Harry's

They do sets and how to's. Mine found electric too harsh.

MrsDina · 25/11/2023 11:08

Disposables are awful, wet shaving takes practice.

he could start with a good quality electric shaver - Braun or Phillips.

if he wants to start wet shaving, a traditional safety razor and blades are the nicest. You can get some really nice stuff here -

it may sound mad, but there are loads of YouTube videos on how to wet shave properly with a traditional safety razor!

I think at 17 he should be researching and buying it himself, he’s an adult. From his own money he earned.

There is always one. Who cares what you think.

Harry’s are good (apparently)

My dses both have Braun cordless electric rechargeable shavers (something like these: https://www.braunshop.co.uk/electric-shavers/series-3-electric-shavers/series-3-310s-wetanddry-shaver/11446320.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsJHPhOzcggMVhZBQBh1sNwvWEAAYASAAEgKIM_D_BwE), although ds1 has moved on to wet shaving now (he uses Harry’s).

My 17 year old has a Braun cordless rechargeable too. He likes it. No having to stand near a plug.

I hope this doesn’t sound judgemental, but boys develop much more slowly than girls, in my experience. The average 17 year old boy is nowhere near an ‘adult’, in my humble opinion.

It sounds like this one needs some gentle guidance and support. As do we all sometimes.

Why is it important he spends his own money on something that his body requires? Do you think it's important teenage girls spend their own money on sanitary products?

Thanks everyone. I think I'll go for an electric one. He's not very good at asking for help. He could ask his grandad or his uncle. But he'd rather not. I'll tell my dad to look out for an opportunity to talk to him and I'll suggest youtube.
I'm glad he feels he can ask me and I'm always happy to help him.

Or I guess I can get him both options and he can experiment.

“I’m glad he feels he can ask me”

I can’t over-state how important this is. You sound like a cool mum.

Men are actually terrible at supporting each other with personal issues. It’s literally pathetic, and quite scary. Never assume a man will get support from another man for something intimate or personal - he won’t. I can believe he is less embarrassed asking you than his uncle.

Women look to other women for support, and men look to women for support.

But, hey, that’s why mums are awesome, and why Mumsnet knows everything!!

I have one son who wet shaves and another who uses electric. Its an individual choice. I wet shave with Geo Trumper products. I would advise care on choice of shaving foam, aftershave, etc.
Mach3 is a good choice. More blades clog up quicker, and would be substantially less initial cost than an electric (Note: There are several sorts to chose from; bar, rotary, rechargeable, etc.).

My 2 DS have electric shavers, don't have heavy growth yet & suits them fine. I just look ed on amazon & went with best reviews tbh

Do you have children/teenagers?
Would you expect a girl to pay for sanitary products? If so, from what age?

nettytree · 25/11/2023 18:33

Try a philips one blade. Nice and gentle

TeeBee · 25/11/2023 18:39

Mine love Phillips OneBlade

I’m in my 30s, independent and self sufficient, and yet still appreciate it when my parents offer guidance if I feel out of my depth. There’s no age limit on love and support.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 25/11/2023 18:50

The rechargeable one blade has been great for my son.
