Apprenticeships @ 18 and moving away to get one

Not sure which topic to put this in...

Ds currently Yr 13, doing Alevels and current predictions are 3As - Biology, History, Business Studies.

Not really interested in uni, in his words he can't see himself just studying anything for another 3 years.

He is interested in specific apprenticeships, but there aren't likely to be any of these locally.
Most will probably be in London and also in regional centres.

How common is it for 18yo apprentices to move away to start their apprenticeship?

Salary likely to be around £18-£20k, presumably London would be more (how much more?). He is currently looking at some in Leeds, so £600ish for room rent?

It seems doable, but obviously a lot less spare cash than if he was able to stay at home for at least the first year or so.

Happy to support him in whatever he wants to do, but can see it being a lot harder for him having to move away, take on everything that goes with that, start a full time job and undertake the professional studies & exams that go with it.

I did the same as a graduate, but that's 3 years older and having had the easy transition into moving away and taking care of myself via uni.

Just wondered if anyone had any experiences to share.

Work for a firm that hires 50+ apprentices a year. They earn significantly more than that. The majority move away and they seem to buddy up and live in share houses just live students and have a ball! The only thing that’s different is that they don’t get long uni holidays so they do have to make a real effort to settle in their new town and make it home- they get 25 days holiday a year like a normal employer so can’t be popping home all the time. Maybe make the location part of the consideration and visit some of the places your DC may end up living to check they’re happy with it?

I did an apprenticeship that came with room and board (& a tiny wage) however it wasn't a degree apprenticeship, rather a level 2 and a gap year where I worked as an outdoor activity instructor for summer camps and school groups. It was a great experience and good half-way house before going to university afterwards. I'd had enough of studying after GCSEs and A levels and needed a break.

user1471548941 what are they apprentices in?
I think we tend to start around £18k for a school leaver and £22k for a graduate on our apprenticeships (accountancy).

He is looking at consultancy, which appears to be CIMA level 4 at first, and £20k seems to be about the level.

I think location is going to very much depend on where the openings are, atm he's seen Cardiff, Bristol & Leeds which are all quite some way from us.

Thanks for both the replies.

Investment Banking. It’s a full degree apprenticeship with a degree from a Russell Group university.
