My son used to read. Now when he's not at school/football/out with his mates he's all phone phone PlayStation (at his dad's) phone.

He likes diary of a wimpy kid books and the last thing he read other than that was the first Marcus Rashford book, which he enjoyed.

I'm looking for book recommendations considering the above please. Things that are easy enough to read, entertaining, but which might help a little with his English because he keeps telling me I'm using difficult words when I'm just using normal English, plus he needs to get on track for his GCSEs...

Thanks!

My son stopped reading at around 10/11. 😥Instead of books, I try to send him good quality news article about things he is interested in. This can be just as effective for vocabulary and comprehension.

If he likes football, maybe a subscription to Four Four Two or The Athletic.

When my DS stopped reading, I bought him magazines in things he was interested in. DD reads the news everyday.

I would prefer them to read books and DS is coming back around to it, he's currently reading Bear Grylls autobiography, but any reading is good.

Do you read? I make sure the tv is off and I'm reading and I talk about what I'm reading and how reading helps me switch off at night and sleep. I think that they both think I'm pretty boring but I know that seeing my DF read a lot and having books around the house encouraged me Wink

My ds who didn't read very much at that age got into Robert Muchamore. They were new at the time and he wanted each new one the day it came out. He read all the old ones again in anticipation of the new one. Turned him into a serious reader. Once they had to bring in what they were reading at home to class and he was surprised to see a good few Muchamore fans. There is about 10 at least in the series but need to start at the beginning. Should be in the library.

My 12yo loves the Jonathan Stroud books. He has a series for slightly older children - The Bartimaeus Series 4

Douglas Adam’s The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? MY DS loved the Terry Pratchett books When my DC were growing up we always had a reading hour after lunch in the school holidays. We all sat and read and friends were told to bring a book. The other thing you could do is read to him - this isn’t just for little ones. Try Lord of the Flies or To Kill a Mockingbird or The Hunger Games.

DS got back into the swing of reading recently and is also 13 so not all hope is lost! He likes skullduggery and lord of the rings and eragon two good examples. There’s also comic books or japanese manga

I'd look at the Defenders series by Tom Palmer. It's got football themes combined with history and is very good for engaging boys with reading.

My sons stopped reading too but they were happier discussing current affairs and other subjects of interest that they'd seen online. They both play a lot of games but they have niche interests that they watch on YouTube too.

Thanks everyone! This weekend has been mad completely forgot I posted... Lots of good ideas there to look into.

And yes, I do read!

The Cherub Series? Yes to this- my 13 year old really enjoys them. They’re not high literature but at least he’s reading. I also find that they will read if screens aren’t an option so I just have time at the weekends and before bed when it’s no screens and then I find he’ll pick up a book.

My 13yo loves the Rick Rioden books, starting with Percy Jackson. He used to enjoy the wimpy kid and David Walliams books when he was younger.
