Has anyone got any tips on how I can help Dd13 with her hair? She showers before bed and when she gets up next morning it's greasy, shes tried different shampoos, no conditioner I really don't know what else to try are these £20+ shampoos worth it? She's getting teased at school because of it and it's affecting her confidence.

I have the same problem
The only solution is washing it daily, in the morning

I've suggested the washing in the morning but typical teen girl that's not an option

^^

Not sure why it's not an option? It's either morning hair wash, or greasy hair

🤷

I was the exact same as a teenager and still struggle with greasy hair now! I find that cheaper shampoos tend to be better for greasy hair and doing a double wash and then blow drying. When ever I have used expensive products they tend to weigh the hair down, I personally like L’Oréal thickening shampoo. I find adding dry shampoo before bed and curling my hair I also stops it from becoming greasy so usually do this if I’m having a weekend away so I don’t have to worry about washing my hair daily.
When I was an older teen I started the pill which really helped, I also found having highlights also prevented my hair becoming so greasy so quickly, I suppose because the bleach dries the hair out so might be something to consider when she’s older?

Orange67 · 12/10/2023 15:10

Is she washing her shampoo out properly? Using too much conditioner?

RhymesWithTangerine · 12/10/2023 17:06

Elvive Shampoo - the light green one.

DS has this - but it’s because his face is greasy and his hair gets stuck to it overnight. Has she got a good skincare regime?

PurpleBugz · 12/10/2023 17:42

Oh man i have been plagued by greasy hair.

T gel shampoo. Or washing up liquid.
Only condition the ends.
Shower in the morning.
Try not to wash it at weekends/holidays as frequent washing makes it get greasy faster.
Change her pillow case more frequently.

Spottyhousecoat · 12/10/2023 19:39

Thanks everyone we'll try a few of these and see how she gets on.
She already uses the light green elevive shampoo and conditioner and balsam tea tree alternatively. I'm definitely going to get her to dry her hair before she goes to bed as she does go to bed with it wet.
She washes it every second day not every day.
She's not a girlie girl and doesn't bother with products other than the dry shampoo.
Skin wise she uses nip+fab and has lovely clear skin again she doesn't wear make up that helps.
Pillowcase changed weekly and she's not particularly sweaty - she could get a couple of days out a school shirt were as her sister is quite sweaty and her shirts are def one day!!
She's had her periods for a couple of years now so I don't think it's related to them.
I've told her to shampoo twice tonight and blow dry before bed, so we'll see how it goes.

Going to bed with it wet definitely won’t help. If I let my hair air-dry during the day, it always ends up looking lank and horrible.

Orange67 · 12/10/2023 21:12

I'm going to guess it's the going to bed with it wet. Mine always feels oily the following day.

SirenSays · 12/10/2023 21:18

For me it's like the dry shampoo counts as a wash. So if she's using it a lot, her hair may react like she's washing it every day, which can make it greasy.

LaDamaDeElche · 12/10/2023 21:20

Going to bed with wet hair isn't going, it's also likely that she isn't washing her scalp properly. Can you wash and dry it for her one night and see if it's still greasy the next day? I bet it won't be. Also, dry shampoo can help too on days it looks v greasy.

LaDamaDeElche · 12/10/2023 21:21

Sorry, missed that she was using dry shampoo already.

henrysugar12 · 12/10/2023 10:05

How often is the pillowcase changed?

Yes, to this^

CandidClarisse · 12/10/2023 21:31

The people who are saying Fairy washing up liquid are onto something! You can't do it all the time as it's harsh, but every now and then it's good as it strips all the old product and build up from the hair. It's basically the same as these clay and clarifying shampoos! I'd give that a try see if it helps.

Reallybadidea · 12/10/2023 21:34

I agree with reverse washing ie condition first then shampoo. Also worth trying a sulphate-free shampoo and silicone free conditioners. Sulphates are really harsh and can encourage your hair to produce more oils and silicones can lead to build-up.

I've found the combination of these two things have meant that I only need to wash my hair twice a week rather than every day.

imip · 12/10/2023 21:40

Two of my teen dds are exactly the same. Presumably you can use any washing up liquid. I tend to use method or ecover or is it something about the bigger names of dishwashing liquid

PenguinTattoo · 12/10/2023 22:01

My child had this exact issue, washed at night, went to sleep with wet hair, greasy by morning. I looked at some old threads and bought this shampoo. It has been a revelation. Still washed at night, sleeping with wet hair, but in the morning hair is literally fluffy and still ok when home from school. Amazing stuff. Although when I tried it on my hair, I didn't love the smell, but it doesn't linger.

I think I paid less than this, so might be worth looking around. But I would buy this again at any price up to £15, it's that good!

BigBundleOfFluff · 12/10/2023 22:10

I've been the greasy hair girl. Only stopped being quite so greasy in my 40's. I've tried not washing it as much and it just got greasier and greasier.
If my hair gets even a little wet It goes greasy. So she needs to make sure her hair is totally totally dry before going to bed- right through to her scalp. Add in a spray of dry shampoo before bed too.
Clean pillow cases as often as possible and washing her hairbrushes in fairy liquid regularly.
The most important thing though - is to not touch or fiddle with her hair that makes my hair greasy too.

Girlattheback · 12/10/2023 22:20

Fine hair tends to gets greasy quickly. I have this and my DD’s was especially greasy at puberty but it does get better. Still needs very regular washing though or use dry shampoo before bed if you’re going to use it.

I have tried many many shampoos over the years and the standard Head and Shoulders works the best. We don’t have dandruff it just cleans really well without leaving a residue. Add in a light leave in conditioner to her routine - I use Paul Mitchell The Conditioner- a tiny pea sized amount. You don’t want to overload fine hair with product or it will look greasier.

Can your daughter wash her hair leaning over the side of the bath in the morning so she doesn’t have to shower at the same time?

felisha54 · 12/10/2023 22:23

She needs to dry it properly. Mine would be greasy and lank if it wasn't dried.

bossybloss · 12/10/2023 22:24

Sorry not read all the replies but I believe highlights help as it dries the hair out slightly .

Goldmember · 12/10/2023 22:25
  • Shampoo a small amount but do it twice getting right into the roots and rinse properly (my DDs were rubbish at rinsing)

  • conditioner for fine hair, a small amount through the ends and rinse properly.

  • wrap in microfiber to dry then style with dryer.

  • clean pillowcases, preferably silk.

caringcarer · 12/10/2023 22:47

My 17 year old FS has the same issue. I get him to change the pillowcase every night.

Keep his hair cut shorter as it doesn't look so bad and quicker to wash and dry.

Shampoo twice really rubbing scalp first time but not on second time.

Make absolutely sure all shampoo is rinsed out. Only tiny bit of conditioner to end of hair.

Add a tiny drop of vinegar to the rinsing water.

Stop touching it. No running fingers through it.
